I'm surprised no one is talking about a possible snow event after new years!

What possible snow event? Tell us more - I've been away and am just checking in. What are the possibilities, where, when, and how much? Thanks in advance.

Ha you guys are asking the million dollar questions. I'm just going by local extended forecasts. Temps in mid 30s close to the coast and a good chance of rain at the same time. I'm not too good at watching the models though so don't ask me lol

You can't just assume that because there will be rain at night and a low in the low-mid 30's that a snow event is happening. That rain may move through ahead of a front.

True, I will add that in most cases, the only time you will see snow in the south is with a low pressure tracking either along the southern coast or further south with cold air already in place.

Also, another scenario is a strong low pressure system moving out of the GOM with an arctic air mass in place. We of course remember the March '93 historic superstorm that originated in the GOM that bought ridiculous snow totals in the Deep South.

Wow, could you imagine anything like that happening again?

I've heard some questions in the Texas thread about snow potential for the south. Before I even attempt this please take note that things work differently in the southeast (terrain, geographical location) for cold air movement than in Texas.

There have been a few models at various times showing potential wintry precip for the deep south. Right now, I would keep an eye on trends if I were sitting between I-20 and I-40. Expect rain this week south of there for the New Year's period, after that things get a little trickier. I'm not certain how cold air movement works in this region but if the storm gets it's act together a little more might get interesting.

We had a lot of virga today too in SE TX. Made for some very interesting looking clouds to say the least. Even had radar returns suggesting rain, but none reached the ground. Looks like the wetting of the column for next weeks rains has begun.

Just to give an idea of what type of winter we are having so far here in south Louisiana, yesterday morning we had our coldest morning yet here in Baton Rouge of 28. I have a couple tropical sages, cassia, milkweed, that have yet to freeze back. Yes they have been nipped, but only slightly. Even this morning, I realized the poinsettias I planted this past spring have not frozen back and in fact are just beginning to bloom. Even the mild winter last year, I had the plants above frozen back by Christmas. I would expect that by February we will have the killing freeze, but that remains to be determined by the PNA, AO, NAO, SOI, La Nina, El Nino, Taco Bell etc.

Even so, it seems like we have had a colder winter than last year. I hardly remember a freeze last year and we have had a few this year and quite a few nights in the 30's. Still nothing like the winters before. I hope we have at least one really good cold snap with some snow but I say that every year and I hardly get surprised. lol

I know, a miserable cold rainy day! There are hints of some real cold weather in 2-4 weeks time so maybe that will be our shot at some winter weather this year. Long ways off but something to watch.

My weather.com app lists a special weather bulletin saying some areas in extreme southwest Mississippi and the Florida parishes of Louisiana may see some sleet mixed in with rain tonight. Not too surprised but to have a special weather bulletin for a few sleet pellets? lol
