That's a shortwave (upper air disturbance) generating enough lift for sleet.

How far can it get into Texas strain?

Special Weather Statement
National Weather Service Brownsville TX
417 PM CST Sun Dec 31 2017

TXZ248>257-010600-
Zapata-Jim Hogg-Brooks-Kenedy-Starr-Hidalgo-Inland Willacy-
Inland Cameron-Coastal Willacy-Coastal Cameron-
Including the cities of Zapata, Hebbronville, Falfurrias, Sarita,
Rio Grande City, Roma, McAllen, Edinburg, Pharr, Mission,
Weslaco, Raymondville, Brownsville, Harlingen, Port Mansfield,
Port Isabel, South Padre Island, Laguna Heights, and Laguna Vista
417 PM CST Sun Dec 31 2017

...Dangerously cold temperatures and wind chills expected for the
start of 2018...

A potent Arctic cold front is clearing through Deep South Texas
and the Rio Grande Valley this afternoon with temperatures
expected to fall steadily through Tuesday morning. The surge of
very cold air arrives in two waves. The first is expected this
afternoon and evening as the winds turn from the north to
northeast and temperatures begin to fall. A more substantial surge
of Arctic air is expected later New Year`s Eve when the stronger
north to northeast winds arrive and the colder temperatures
become more noticeable. Expect temperatures to tumble into the 40s
and low 50s, possibly colder, by midnight New Year`s Eve with
temperatures continuing to drop into the 30s through sunrise
Monday morning. The mercury will likely remain in the 30s all day
Monday. Strong Arctic high pressure will continue to build into
the region through Wednesday night keeping temperatures well below
normal values for early January. Freezing temperatures are
looking more likely for most of Deep South Texas and the Rio
Grande Valley on Tuesday morning. Highs on Tuesday will once again
struggle to rebound back into upper 30s to lower to mid 40s with
another good potential for freezing temperatures across most of
the region Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

The combination of the very cold temperatures and the persistent
northerly surface winds will produce DANGEROUSLY low wind chill
values in the upper 20s to low 30s Sunday night and the 20s for
Monday and Monday Night.

An upper level disturbance will then move across Northern Mexico
late New Years Eve through Monday with light rain and drizzle
expected to develop. The rain amounts are expected to be light and
the disturbance is expected to weaken considerably by Tuesday
when some temperatures approach freezing. There remains some
potential for light sleet to mix in with the cold rain and drizzle
Monday and Monday Night with little to no accumulation expected.
Some of the ice pellets may persist into Tuesday morning across
the lower Texas coastline with the precipitation chances tapering
off later in the day Tuesday.

Residents of Deep South Texas should make preparations for this
cold snap and remember the four P`s...Protection of Pipes,
Plants, and Pets. Stay tuned to the latest forecasts and
statements from the National Weather Service on this developing
winter weather situation.

Possibly to just East of Matagorda Bay...SW of Metro Houston in Matagorda, Jackson and Wharton Counties. Still worth monitoring across SE Texas along the I-10 Corridor since the shorter range Mesoscale guidance shows some increase in low level moisture tomorrow as well as Tuesday when an upper level trough swings across the Southern Plains and a weak Coastal trough is attempting to develop Monday night into Tuesday.

GREAT PORTA!!!! I just called in my report of everything starting to ice over, the car, etc to the NWS!!! They were very happy to get the report and turned it in. So call in what you are seeing. I have a bad feeling about wrecks all over the place tonight. Local Met said "the atmosphere was drying out" according to the NWS? Uhmmm....Well???? I think not exactly....:froze: :froze: :froze:

Quick analysis. The HRRR didnt expect this "tongue" of moisture in the 700MB height to be anywhere near this strong. It's heading eastward in the direction Srain mentioned.

Thinking that it may make it down to you and myself here in Georgetown. Cars and anything else out in the open has a coating of ice here now.

I'm not really sure if it's still misting or has ended. If it is misting its so light can't feel it on my skin. There is a very thin layer of ice on exposed surfaces but the ground looks like it's dry.

I feel something falling here in Jacksonville but can't really tell what. Very light snow reported in Tennessee Colony, Palestine, and Elkhart, TX in the past hour from friends on Facebook. A very thin accumulation in some pictures on elevated surfaces.

Cold up here in Justin. Currently at 22*. Drove from Downtown Ft Worth to Justin this morning, and took us 2 hours. Normally a 30 minute drive. Happy New Year to all of you and hoping for a snowy 2018!! We still have a few months.
