The eye is not closed anymore, but it is smaller and the temp. pattern has improved, not to mention an 11-mb pressure fall in less than 16 hours.

50 knots, which agrees with the visual estimate too. So a very good estimate by the NHC.

Ok, here is the Math.

60 x .90 = 54 knots

60 x .85 = 51 knots

They are flying at 850mb, which means that the reduction factor is 80%, which rounds up to 50 knots.

what kind of wind speeds can a 990mb pressure support. I thought it would be higher than 60 mph

990mb pressure can support 70 MPH, but this is a strengthening system so the winds may lag behind the pressure.

I'm not sure, given that the wind is correct, and it's the wind that most people really worry about. But they will have it in the intermediate advisory.
