It has to be one of the strongest storms ever at such latitude in the open Atlantic (not Gulf). I can't think of the last time there was such a low pressure at that latitude.

Possibly only igor 2010 and dog of 1950 are a few that come close.

Might've been a cat.5 earlier since the B ring isn't as thick as it was and they still found 130kt winds.

They will evaluate all the data at the post-season report and will issue the final word on peak intensity.

I’d like to see the second pass first. If the pressure is rising, odds are decent it was a 5 earlier in the day. It’s also possible they find higher winds in the SE quadrant like last flight.

Franklin may have already peaked, though that warm eye and presentation is still beautiful.

It might still have a chance to make it to 155mph, but it doesn’t look like it’s going to go C5 unless it gets a post-season upgrade.

And none were found. Maybe this peaked earlier in the day (even though the pressure seems to have dropped a bit), maybe this is its peak and it leveled off not longer after the morning flight. Regardless, this is an important flight in understanding the intensity of these warm eye, B/W-ring storms (Douglas, Darby, Dora, Sam, etc).

Really has been a beautiful storm indeed, wow, definitely some of the best weather events I've seen this year so far! Great to watch this system while no one is getting devastated below.

I think hurricane Franklin reached its peak intensity around 16-18z with winds around 135 kt... Franklin has maintained a pretty stable appearance ever since, and is probably now starting to slowly fade, although his eye pressure continues to drop....

#Franklin's central pressure is down to 926 hPa - the lowest central pressure for a #hurricane this far north (29°N) in the open Atlantic (e.g., not Gulf of Mexico) on record. Atlantic pressure records have been recorded consistently since 1979.
