What does that mean? I googled the term, but I didn't find any explanations that applied to this scenario.

Texas storm chasers are reporting heavy snow in that band out by midland so let’s see if it works its way towards DFW

It's just a met saying because the mountain range up there in western Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma creates sort of a "shadow" on a surface temp map around the arctic cold that drains down from the north and sort of acts like a barrier/dam to delay it getting into the SE areas of Texas and western Louisiana.

That's why you see it getting much colder further west into the HC and SC TX first because terrain/topography isn't an impediment there to the cold surging south.

Is this from the Ouachitas?

Yup

HRRR was picking up on this the past several runs. Maybe next weekend although I already suspect that won't be a thing here either. We got almost an inch of rain, more on the way and all the schools are cancelled Monday. I'll take.

Winter 2020-2021 :cold:

All observations are in Tecumseh, OK unless otherwise noted.

Winter posts are focused mainly for Oklahoma & Texas.

Take any of my forecasts with a grain of salt, refer to the NWS, SPC, and NHC for official information

I don’t know if this is lake effect, but I swear I’m seeing flurries here in uptown. I can see what appear to be tiny flakes blowing in the wind when I look at the lamps outside. No sleet, no pings, no noise at all

I still haven't seen rates that make me think the snow aspect is remotely historic here in Oklahoma. Yeah it's a solid storm yeah it's not 85 degrees anymore yeah we're lucky it snowed at all yeah it's gonna hit warning criteria yeah we may end up getting 6-7 inches but technically ive seen that twice since 2022 here  it's not anything unusual

It wasn't the apocalypse everyone acted like it would be

It might be in other states but not here

The video from Midland is a prime example I haven't seen snow like that here this whole storm

Getting some thunder/lightning as some heavy pockets of sleet and freezing rain move in to San Antonio. Incredible dynamics with this system down here overnight.

Hey man. Be happy with what you get. It’s better than nothing. And you’ll look back in July when it’s 105 and say “damn. That was awesome.” I got 3” of the weirdest precipitation I’ve ever seen. Fog snow all day mixed in with graupel. Unless next weekend is a barn burner, I will look back and think how lucky I am.

I just wish everyone hadnt acted like it was gonna be some apocalyptic thing we've never seen before. Thats all

I know we're lucky to get snow at all here. There were moments when it was in the 80s at Christmas I seriously wondered if it would even happen at all for sure

You got some lightning headed your way. It just passed close to my house a few minutes ago. Down to 30° here.

I have a cousin who lives in Choctaw, OK and he’s always telling me that almost every snowstorm is a bust in OK for the most part and it’s always overhyped.

I’m with you my friend. Last year models were saying “ 12-18”. I knew it was wrong. I got 7.5”. 7.5” is awesome. Whatever you get will be awesome too. The pics you have up make me jelly. You never know until the upper level trough swings by. I’d trade what I have now for those pics you’ve put up. Stay strong. Peace.
