Knowing that such an outcome was well within the margin of error until basically this morning, do feel it would have been a wiser decision to gamble that many lives?

I’ve thought about this throughout the day. I knew there was going to be a point in time where people are going to chastise the Mayor of Tampa for what she said. Tbh it’s a “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” situation. Like you said, if she decided to be indifferent about Milton, and he made landfall at Clearwater, then people would be calling for her resignation for not being urgent enough. I can’t speak for most people, but I rather my elected official be urgent or even slightly dramatic with what’s presented to them than be lax. And I rather them be wrong but have my things to come home to. Rather than them being lax, wrong, and then I have to be rescued or put in a casket because they weren’t being urgent enough and I listened to them.

I agree 100%. Real leaders do what they have to in order to prevent loss of life. Consequences be dammed. And that’s what she did there. She didn’t want anyone to not take it as a life threatening event which it was

And I have to believe that the people who stayed realize how bad it could have been when they see how bad it ended up and will vote for her again. It could have been much worse but it wasn't a washout.

Confirmed reports of fatalities in Ft. Pierce from a tornado. Rumors online have it at 25. Very sad as it appears all are from a retirement community in Lakewood Park

After a pretty quiet day, it is ramping up here in coastal Brevard County. We had a flurry of squall and rain, including an apparent Tornado in Cocoa Beach around 430ish. After that, up until about half hour ago, had been quiet.

Seeing sustained TS winds it seems now

When I saw the pictures a couple days ago of them putting out cots over the whole field to house thousands of first responders, I wondered what they were thinking using a dome made of fabric to house people at ground zero for a hurricane. Now the roof is in tatters.

I’ve heard the winds increasing here in Melbourne. The tornado was confirmed according to WFTV.

The current record for the number of tornados spawned by a hurricane is 120, held by Hurricane Ivan. Frances and Rita both had 100+. What are the chances for Milton to break this record?

I think in terms of numbers it won't be nearly that high; mainly because the outbreak was over a spatially confined region of the Florida peninsula. However a lot of these were stronger and longer-tracked than the tornadoes typically seen with tropical cyclones.

This will be one of the iconic images of Hurricane Milton, especially due to its resonance with the Superdome in Katrina:

Yep agreed... Ivan, Frances, and Rita ended up spawning tornado outbreaks over a large geographical area as they trekked inland which increased the numbers considerably, whereas with this system booking east into the Atlantic the outbreak will be confined to South-Central Florida. However, as you mentioned there were several EF2+ within this outbreak, which isn't too common as most TC-spawned tornadoes tend to be weaker.

Not confirmed, but I was told the Mayor of Cocoa Beach home was hit by the tornado with a neighbor losing their roof(St Croix ave)...edited for better information

Still scuttlebutt for now...will confirm or rebuke later

This stinks. It's catastrophic. I'm so lucky to be safe in Orlando. I'm sure you're all getting stories... I am too. I have a lot of friends and family all over the state and this is a complete disaster.

We’ll know more about the scope of the damage on the west coast in coming hours and days, so it’s too early to comment on catastrophic impacts there- but right now, my fear is that the ‘Chimney Rock’ from Milton will be Vero from the tornado(s) earlier today. Some of the reports and images I’m seeing, and hearing from those in the area, are of total swathes of devastation. I hope with all my heart that I’m wrong…

Aren't you worried about flooding from rainfall?

Still seeing velocities up to 120mph only 2kft up on that northern side. Surely it’s nowhere near that strong at the surface but could make for some surprisingly high gusts in the interior of the peninsula.
