So people in the landfall area are experiencing worse conditions in the back eyewall. Not surprised judging by the radar but it seems uncommon for the back eyewall to be stronger than the front.

Iam in Largo and it looks like we as well as Tampa got extremely lucky so far. Still have power. Mostly branches down around here. My brother in Dunedin had a huge tree break in half that almost took out his neighbors house.

Looks like meso vortices within the eyewall.

I genuinely wonder how Ian Livingston will make that graphic when the 7th Cat 4/5 hurricane hits the US Gulf Coast

Unless explicitly stated, all info in my posts is based on my own opinions and observations. Tropical storms and hurricanes can be extremely dangerous. Do not think you can beat Mother Nature. Refer to an accredited weather research agency or meteorologist if you need to make serious decisions regarding an approaching storm.

The wind has been relentless today. Rain has slowed down finally.

Anyone know about the surge situation in Punta Gorda from the ongoing north flow off the river?

looks pretty dry to the east of the storm, we are still getting nailed in Orlando but to the south of us, no rain...very interesting

update that dry spot never came and now that big area of convection is about to move onto us...

meanwhile just south of us still bone dry!!!

It's like there was no win situation here. The track Ian took brought devastating storm surge and winds, but had it tracked further north weaker and crawled slowly up the coast, it would have brought horrible flooding rains due to lack of movement. So not sure one was better than the other. We'll never know....

Just texted with a family friend who has no power or internet for hours in Tampa. She said it’s still pretty stormy but was relieved when I told her the eye came ashore to the south.

Yeah, just went to the beach in Satellite Beach with my daughter. Getting pretty windy. I live about 1/2 mile from the beach, and it is amazing to me what a difference that half mile makes.

watching the track very closely as I have a house there under contract due to close in 10 days.
looking at the radar, the center appears to be trending a bit east of track forecast as of now.

May cross over around Cocoa, rather than New Smyrna. Something to watch.

Lets see what they say at 8:00 update.

Stay safe.

For the first time in my chasing career I’m glad to have missed this historic event.

Gotta get those first-responders in stat! As soon as it is declared safe they will be coming on the major roads like an army! Thousands and thousands of vehicles ready to help restore order.

Best if a big team is on the other side cutting their way outbound. It’s fun when you meet in the middle! Always a good moment for all!

But I’m in Northern Nevada now running a small gold-mining operation. No way to head east for a hurricane again.

Yeah… glad to have missed it. Chasing has changed a lot. Some good some bad.

Although I have been a hurricane forecaster since 1980 that only means I've been wrong lots of times.
