To shutter or not to shutter is the question. What would you guys do? I live in a newer sturdy concrete block single story home.

Shutter. If she deviates you could be caught. And she is huge.

PM of Antigua and Barbuda on ABS Radio says that 90% of properties are either damaged or destroyed on the island of Barbuda.

Terrible news, just released seconds ago.

Not that it matters but just for technicality's sake, I don't think the NHC made Irma more than 185mph...

Extrap pressure on the latest run into Irma was down at 911.3mbs, so still strengthening for sure at the moment. Certainly hints of another outer eyewall trying to form but Irma has rebuffed previous attempts so lets see how it progresses.

I think the stronger it is, the less noticeable the EWRC becomes... I'm not so sure though.

That is so sad to hear; Princess Juliana airport was always one of the most picturesque airports in the Caribbean. My thoughts are with everyone who had been, or will be in the path of Irma. :(

Oh, that is awful.
We went over there when on a cruise and it was so cool standing on the edge of the road off the beach withstanding the wind generated by the jets taking off.
I heard they stopped letting people do that when someone got seriously injured but it was a total rush holding on and watching.
Seeing the jets come in over you really low was also really cool.
Sad for the people of St. Maarten.....

So among the high rises in downtown Miami will be this problem:

http://www.miamiherald.com/news/weather ... 76947.html

The many construction cranes are only rated to 145mph winds. Adjacent residents in buildings and homes are being asked to evacuate if they collapse during the storm.

Similar to Cuba in Gustav which produced the strongest wind gust measured in a tropical cyclone in the Atlantic and yet (as far as I recall) had 0 fatalities. In the US we see towns heavily damaged with similar or slightly weaker winds (look at Rockport in Harvey or Port Charlotte in Charley).

Actually, per the poster above it is quite the opposite. "PM of Antigua and Barbuda on ABS Radio says that 90% of properties are either damaged or destroyed on the island of Barbuda.Terrible news, just released seconds ago."

There's a different report that 90% of the buildings in Barbuda have been destroyed. It was posted just before your post.

Sadly that seems more accurate, and it appears CNN or their sources have no clue what they are talking about... will delete previous post.

The only report I've been able to find is the one where the PM said (5 hours ago) that they came through remarkably well with no fatalities. Unless that is false. Where is the other report located?
