The lack of coordination in this day and age is mind boggling to me. We can organize all kinds of things so efficiently so well. With each natural disaster there keeps being talk of doing it better next time... when will we learn?? Especially here in the Gulf Coast. I read on ABC 13 a minute ago a notice begging people to bring their flat bottom boats to rescue those in need. That is not the way to do this. Random people - even if they are experienced with their boat - with no rescue training equals potential disaster. Here is an example of a request -

Just my opinion - not being political - this is bigger one party or another. This is just awful.

It is extraordinarily easy to criticize without an understanding of the gargantuan undertaking of mobilizing resources and making sure that they are properly allocated. This is historic and unprecedented. It is not easy to coordinate people, especially when emergency services are usually among the *last* to be funded.

I was not meaning to be critical, just thought it should be a pertinent discussion, perhaps after this is over. So far as resources, there are many, as now, that would do it for nothing. But again, we can discuss later.

Had Harvey jogged unexpectedly in the 24hrs or so leading up to landfall, Houston could have been hit by much stronger winds, perhaps even hurricane winds. My guess is that the Texas NG wanted to keep their resources ready, but out of the direct impact zone, so as to keep them from being compromised. Just a guess though, that isn't my area of expertise.

Wonder how they plan to get in...I10 is flooded isn't it? Maybe airlifts initially when wind appropriate?

I texted Southerngale just now. She's my aunt and I haven't heard that they're in danger yet so I would think all is well. I'm sure she'll check in soon though.

They are sending additional resources. Many had been deployed to Rockport, etc. for search and rescue.

I am watching with horror and hoping people in Texas will be safe.
@NWS tweeted that this event is "unprecedented & all impacts are unknown & beyond anything experienced."

Assets could have also been needed 200 miles away in CC or San Antonio or Austin. The biggest thing is for people to take actions to take care of themselves (evacuate or otherwise prepare), then help each other, and finally get helped by official authorities. That is the most effective way even when it isn't the most efficient (which it often is as well). It starts with taking warnings seriously but in this day of hyperbole, hard to get people to take notice.

Despite the the titles of things, there really aren't comprehensive plans for very infrequent events. Resource allocation dynamics do not allow for it.
