Re: Texas Winter 2010-2011
This will go down as one of the most historic Februaries in Texas. You have snow all over the place, south Texas virtually shut down and everyone is freezing away. Hard to believe experts are predicting next winter to be one of the worst in memory...not to stir up any climate chatter, but I'm thinking the chill will be more expensive and strain the economy more so than a warm up. Next week could be just as atrocious...GFS is already looking cold!

How rare is it to have snow come at us here in NTX from the south? Just looks strange. Quite impressive returns and it's moving rather quick.

.DISCUSSION...
WILL MAKE A FEW CHANGES TO THE FORECAST THIS EVENING. WITH SNOW
ALREADY DEVELOPING OVER CENTRAL TEXAS AND NEW NAM RUN INDICATING A
LITTLE MORE QPF FURTHER NORTH INTO SOUTHEAST OKLAHOMA...WILL RAISE
POPS FOR MOST AREAS THAT WERE NOT ALREADY CATEGORICAL. ALSO...WITH
MORE PRECIPITATION...LOOKS LIKE DEWPOINTS WILL BE ON THE RISE...SO
HAVE ADJUSTED TO FIT THE EVENT. WILL NOT CHANGE THE WARNING OR
ADVISORY AREAS...BUT MUCH OF NORTHEAST TX INTO SOUTHEAST OK
NOT IN THE ADVISORY AREA COULD SEE UP TO ONE INCH OF SNOW.
SHV EVENING SOUNDING SHOWING ALL SNOW AS TYPE...SO WILL DROP
MENTION OF SLEET IN ZONES ALONG A EL DORADO TO JACKSONVILLE LINE
FOR TONIGHT. ONE TO THREE INCHES OF SNOW STILL ENOUGH TO CONTINUE
THE ADVISORY WITHOUT THE SLEET.
Tonight's snow bumped up to 70% for me.

Freezing drizzle. Doesn't show up well on radar, but the stuff is nasty when it falls for a long period of time.

Re: Texas Winter 2010-2011
With our temps as cold as they are top to bottom I wonder if that played any role in the fact that the models had a hard time picking up the snow for NTX tonight?

There is a thin layer of warm air ... some call it a warm tongue of air ... just above the surface layer. That is preventing the precip from being all snow. The precip is too light to show up on radar but freezes on contact on the surface due to the surface temp. There's a lot of times when drizzle doesn't show up on a radar unless the radar is switched to a very sensitive mode.

CBS11 just said reports out of Waco has half an inch of snow on grassy areas.

Is it only grassy areas because of the ground temperatures? I notice on some of the forecasts for snow in Dallas earlier it said half an inch possible in grassy areas. It seems like it would stick to everything it falls on since we've been well below freezing for almost four days.

North Texas is in the teens and low 20s. It will stick like glue on any surface.

I have very tiny flakes here in far North Harris county. I am just south of the Woodlands. Any word on adjusted totals for Houston?
