Re: ATL: IRMA - Hurricane - Discussion
A lot of the east coast of Florida regular board posters are not posting...Probably a good sign they are getting ready...Which is what I'll be doing right after GFS finishes its 12z run....

WOW NWS, according to the TWC, are strong with their wording
"...Miami and parts of SFL will be inhabitable for weeks and maybe even months"

Whichever way Irma makes, this storm is wide in its size. Florida will not be saved from this. This is what NHC sees.

Does anyone have any info on conditions in Dominican Republic or links to reports?
Thanks.

Below is a link to a Google + GIS storm surge depth map. Yellow represents a depth of 3 to 6 feet based on a category 4 hurricane. The map is centered a bit south of Miami when it opens but you can drag the map to anywhere along the Florida coast and this data should display.
To search on an address click “Menu” ==> Search. A search bar opens above the map.
To see the map legend, click “Map Tips” in the upper left corner and then click the “Legend” button.
To change the data overlay to a category 5 hurricane:
1. Click the basemap button (next to the “Menu” button)
2. Look under the “Overlay” heading. Mobile users scroll down.
3. Click “SRES_2017_surge_4” to turn this layer off.
4. Click “SRES_2017_surge_5” to turn that layer on.
This surge data is hosted on a GIS (Geographical Information System) server operated by the State of Florida.
Anyone can make their own custom map link.
Do it like so:
1. Make the map look on your screen the way you want it to look when it opens. You might need to wait a bit before all the surge data appears on your screen.
2. Click Menu ==> Link to this map
3. Copy that link and paste it into a browser.
Tip: If you make map links and post on social media be aware that some platforms will trash the link. For Facebook I always use a link shortener. Reddit on the other hand requires the original link.
For more tips please click "Map Tips" in the upper left corner of the map.

They hit us with that in 2005, and they got Houston with it 2 weeks ago. This was us, and yeah, it was months and years of inhabitability.

One of my best friends all the way back to childhood is in the strongest landfall zone in Cutler Bay...He said he was burned out about it but that everything was replaceable except his life...He plans to evacuate to a strong shelter in north Dade...His house is 3 blocks from the Mangroves by Biscayne Bay and he's in the A or red zone for surge...I told him some models might pull it offshore but to be honest the most accurate tracks were taking it right to him...
I'm not in too much of a different boat so we're going to stay in touch...

I would not be surprised if they did.
you have to remember there has not been a DIrect hit from a cat 4 or 5 on a major metropolitan area in modern times that I can think of. downtown miami taking cat 4 to cat 5 winds ? not good at all..

Re: ATL: Irma: Observations,Web Cams,Local NWS Statements (NE Caribbean/Bahamas/Florida/SC/NC)
Good Morning
St Maarten has been hard hit by Irma.
the link below shows
considerable damage and flooding from Irma in Marigot on the French side..
https://www.rci.fm/infos/societe/les-ra ... -et-photos
I live on the Dutch side which has also had catastrophic damage
The island took a direct hit.
I do not have statistics as to the highest wind recorded as the Meteorological office has not issued a report.
I can tell you that we live in a very strong house and it felt like my house was going to explode. We definitely experienced the eye of Irma and very intense winds before and after the eye passed over us. We have every reason to believe we experienced the full force of a Cat 5 hurricane.
We suffered lot of damage but did not lose our roof.
Many people did lose roofs and we are hearing reports of many businesses being totally destroyed.
We also know there has been substantial looting.
Philipsburg the capital of the Dutch side has many businesses along the boardwalk that were demolished due to storm surge.
There was substantial flooding on both the Dutch side and the French side.
Currently the island has no power, no water, no cell phone service, and limited internet. Broadcast stations are off the air
There are Dutch Marines and French military on the island providing assistance.
This has been a heavy blow for St Maarten, but we will bounce back, as we have done before.
Thinking of our sister islands who are also experiencing the wrath of Irma.

Re: ATL: IRMA - Hurricane - Discussion
According to TWC, they (TWC) said they (NWS) mentioned that in verbatim.
They mentioned that it was posted in a social media page but they didn't specify which one.
I recorded it and have it saved. I'll just try post a video on it.

Looks like finding the true center was a challenge and winds penetrated into the eye. Cat 5 winds completely surround the eye as well.
