wouldnt you think it would lose quite a bit of strength as it approached the carolinas coast due to the cool water?

New outer eyewall circled ... can see it crossing over the abbacos as we speak. the inner eyewall is rotating around in there somewhere...

I'm in a relatively "safe place". Inland 15 miles from the west and north, and 50 miles from the south and east. My elevation is 98 ft. above sea level. HOWEVER, there are quite a few streams and rivers around and we tend to get a lot of flooding when we have down pours. Also, my current place of employment is along the Delaware River in Philadelphia. Storm surge could be a HUGE problem.

We are 2 miles in from the bay and 7 feet above sea level. We are definitely keeping an eye on this storm. We started our preparations yesterday and we are in full force now. The stores were not full at all yesterday. (Both Home Depot & Walmart). I don't think many people are taking this seriously. Everyone please prepare & be safe.

I think the biggest impact to the mid atlantic and northeast will be the very extended periods without electricity for a huge amount of the population centers, let alone the more rural areas. Normally, when a bad storm hits an area, electrical staff from the surrounding states can converge and help with fixing the lines. However, in this case, with such a huge area likely to be impacted with loss of power, it is going to take quite a while to get to all of the downed trees and blown transformers. Staff will be stretched paper thin from north carolina north.
When Fran went through NC, I went 28 days without electricity, being just northeast of Raleigh. We had some help from NY, PA, MD, and VA to help with our cleanup.
This time around, all the expereinced help will also be suffering. This time around, maybe FL can send assistance to the northern states!

For those that like to check in with the buoys, just a reminder that we added all of the buoys to the drop down menu at the top of the page. :-)

What town is that? I have lots of friends and co-workers in Jersey. I actually live in west Brooklyn now, but high enough and far enough away from the water. But many of my friends live down by the water at or near Brighton Beach and the Rockaways and they are not taking this seriously. The keep laughing and saying "not here, not my neighborhood." It's VERY frustrating. I'm hoping when the warnings go up that they'll change their tune. :(

I'm in Glassboro, NJ, just south of Philadelphia in Gloucester County.

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE MOUNT HOLLY NJ

INTERESTING TO NOTE IS THE DEVELOPMENT OF A STRONG 250 MB JET
NORTH OF THE HURRICANE SATURDAY INTO SUNDAY, GENERALLY FROM THE
EASTERN GREAT LAKES TO NORTHERN NEW ENGLAND. SOME OF THE MODELS
INDICATE THAT THE ORIENTATION OF THIS JET IS SUCH THAT IRENE IS
WITHIN THE RIGHT ENTRANCE REGION AS SHE TRACKS NORTHWARD. THIS
SCENARIO COULD HELP WITH A POLEWARD UPPER-LEVEL OUTFLOW CHANNEL
AND ASSIST IN THE INTENSITY OF THE SYSTEM AS A WHOLE.

NJ has declared a state of emergency. The City of Philadelphia is advising people about the potential hazardous conditions and advising people about getting out of the flood prone areas.

THANK GOD.

Oh duh! I just realized it's on your id/avatar there. Sorry, I'm pretty distracted by this non-stop stream of data.

this storm has map changing potential written all over it with respect to barrier islands. i hope folks are preparing to leave those low lying areas and people consider the size of the storm rather than focusing on the max intensity. this is a great time for mets and emergency management to pound home the "ike" lesson to the public.
