Where are you located at?
Just ENE of DFW airport by 161
I would guess you aren't more than 5 miles away from me and already have 2 more inches than me... enjoy it!!!

Re: Texas Winter 2010-2011
Just had to get my workout in. It's now very light snow coming down but I guess more bands are expected? If we have another band like the last I'll break the 5 inch mark.
I have 3.5. Depending on where I measure. I did it again and got 3 inches.

Give it another 30mins the band of Freezing rain, Snow, and Sleet will impact San Antonio to Austin (I-35) and will give you the most signifigant icing yet. What you have now should increase by atleast 1/4"-1/2 " of ice. Don't drive!!!

TXprog make sure you take that hockey stick with you....I don't know the size or depth of that pond but.....
* If you are not sure if the ice is thick enough, stay off it.
* Never skate alone.
* Don't skate in the dark.
ICE THICKNESS
- The Red Cross recommends an ice thickness of at least 6" for safety; the thicker the ice, the better. It's up to YOU to assess the thickness of the ice. The best way to do this is with a drill, and to check in several locations. We do not recommend skating at night or on snow-covered ice because you cannot see how thick the ice is. Water vapour above the ice, or creaking and cracking noises, indicate weak ice.
- The thickness of natural ice varies from place to place. Ice forms over shallow, still water first and is thinner over areas where the water is flowing. One pond may be in good condition while another one nearby is not safe. And ice thickness can vary from place to place on any pond or lake. Be especially cautious around inflow and outflow areas. When the weather is warm, the thickness of natural ice can change from day to day.
YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN, SO BE PREPARED !
- Your chances of rescuing yourself if you fall into deep or flowing water are NOT GOOD. It can be extremely difficult to crawl back out of the water onto fragile ice without proper assistance, and hypothermia will weaken you very quickly. For this reason, skating alone is not recommended. Because of the time it will take for rescue assistance to reach you, proper self-rescue is your best bet.
- IF SOMEONE FALLS IN, that means the ice in that area is dangerous . If you hope to rescue someone who has fallen in, stay away from the thin ice yourself !
Emergency throw bag rescue
Emergency throw bag rescue

-The best way to help the person is to extend a long pole or throw them a line. Carry a hockey stick, a piece of rope, or, even better, an emergency throw bag with you (see photo). Throw bags are easy to make with a length of floating rope, a nylon stuff sack, and a piece of closed-cell foam for flotation. Put the foam in the bottom of the stuff sack, tie one end of the rope to the stuff sack, then stuff the sack with the rope, leaving the other end out. Hold onto the free end of the rope and throw the bag to the victim. My husband and his brothers always carried a hockey stick.
on flowing water my city won't allow anyone on the river until the ice is 12" thick.
The dry snow that many of you folks are getting is like what the northern plains gets (as well as the Arctic) in the middle of winter. So you can now truly say you are getting an Arctic winter. p.s. that snow will only polish the ice and you most definitely won't have safe traction on it with your summer tires (ice tires are manufactured from a mix of silica (a chemical compound) that helps keep the rubber flexible in very cold temperatures and ensures optimal traction on ice. The ice tire is designed for people who frequently drive long distances on the highway, where the surface is icier).

I say if you round it out it's more than likely 3 inches. Still very impressive. It's starting to pick up a tad, but nothing like it was. If we get more bands like that than yeah it'll be above warning criteria. I doubt they'll issue one though.

Yeah in my opinion if we get more bands like this, we may get more than 4 inches easily.. But it might be kinda late to issue a warning.

It's never too late to issue a warning. Some people only tune in where there's a warning, not watch or advisory. I think, for the safety of the general public, we should be placed under a WSW immediately!

Is it just me, or is there a dry slot setting up along a Weatherford to Stephenville line, with a very slow eastern movement? That might be the death of big snows in DFW.

I skated on the roads yesterday. It was pretty smooth and safer than a pond!

Could be, but the radar hasn't been too dependable so far (weird). I'm happy with the snow I've gotten so far

Big Snows??? There's already widespread 3 inch amounts across the metroplex and the ULL is still in west Texas. This wasn't even supposed to begin until around 2 am. I don't think the bulk of this is even here until around 5-8 am.

We have officially become spoiled now. 3 inches no longer get us excited. Big Snows are 10" +
