Morton Salt has a large facility there, there are a couple sea turtle preserves, and Great Inagua Island has a large avian sanctuary (over 80,000 flamingoes, for starters, probably less now.) :(

Hopefully the people (only about 600) are ok.

Poor flamingos :(

Yes Camille was a Cat 5 , but Andrew was the most recent Cat 5 to impact the U.S.

I think Irma will landfall on Florida as a Cat 5. I think she will be able to get by Cuba without much disruption to the inner core, although she will graze or touch along the Cuba coast just as she makes the turn north.

They've had very bad luck lately, taking the eyewalls of Matthew last year and Ike in 2008 as major hurricanes. Also Irene in 2011 as a strengthening category 2. And this is just off the top of my head--there may be more. Those people can't catch a break down there.

Anyway, for what I believe is the first time in the history of the Bahamas, the government evacuated all willing residents of Inagua to a safer island (Nassau).

No word as of yet from Inagua Island., but I fear the worst at this moment as Irma is absolutely pounding the Bahamas.. I just can not phantom the fury of a Category 5 hurricane moving though there this hour.

God speed to our neighbors in the Bahamas this morning!!! My prayers and thoughts are completely with them.

NHC has I it weakening all the way in, albeit too slowly to make much difference.

We're in Orlando now, bumper-to-bumper again.

I think we're going to stop somewhere for the night.

BTW, you forgot Joaquin and the devastation he bought to the Bahamas in October 2015.

EDIT: OK, I think you are just talking about Inagua Island impacts right ?

It's been obvious on IR for a few hours now.

Convection has increased on the south and east sides in the last few frames.

These usually pass over or near a few islands, generally in a path crossing the chains. It seems odd that this one lined up like it did to hit so many of them in a line. Like it targeted them all by staying more clear of the bigger ones that might cause weakening. Almost the perfect worst possible path.

Yeah, I was only talking about Inagua. Joaquin was devasting for several islands in the southern Bahamas, but Inagua got off fine there. Still though, 3 major hurricanes in less than a decade is some terrible luck.

:uarrow: you're correct Weather Guesser in that what has made Irma such an historic and remarkable tropical cyclone is that she's been able to maintain CAT5 strength for so long because she's taking a path where she has amazingly avoided major land interaction within the Greater Antillies, especially Hispaniola. It unfortunately has been the perfect path for Irma to unleash her deadly fury

She will get very close to Cuba just prior to making the north turn, but I think Irma's inner core will not penetrate into Cuba to disrupt her inner core. I believe Irma will landfall as a Cat 5 in Florida.

Hope you find some place. Finished cleaning up and shuttering the place in Key West on Wed. and was lured into a false sense of security by the traffic. Made a brief stop in Miami and the subsequent trip home to the Orlando metro on the Turnpike took almost 11 hours. Finally ditched it at Yeehaw Junction and took the scenic route home.

Has one ever done that before? You almost couldn't 'aim' a ship any better to take that path between the islands. (I know you don't 'aim' ships, just a figure of speech). This path alone strikes me as unusually strange.
