URGENT - WINTER WEATHER MESSAGE
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HOUSTON/GALVESTON TX
248 PM CST MON FEB 10 2014
...FREEZING RAIN ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 3 AM TONIGHT THROUGH
MOST OF TUESDAY...
.A STRONG COLD FRONT WILL CONTINUE TO PUSH INTO SOUTHEAST TEXAS
THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING BRINGING VERY COLD ARCTIC AIR TO THE
REGION. AS TEMPERATURES FALL...A SERIES OF UPPER LEVEL
DISTURBANCES WILL ALSO BE MOVING ACROSS FROM THE WEST TONIGHT AND
TUESDAY. THE COMBINATION OF THESE SYSTEMS WILL HELP TO PRODUCE A
CHANCE OF FREEZING RAIN OVERNIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY MORNING.
TEMPERATURES AT SUNRISE TUESDAY MORNING SHOULD BE AT OR BELOW
FREEZING FOR THESE LOCATIONS SO PATCHY ICE MAY BE POSSIBLE ON
BRIDGES AND OVERPASSES. TEMPERATURES MAY NOT RISE ABOVE FREEZING
UNTIL WELL AFTER NOON ON TUESDAY. THESE ISSUES MAY BE ONGOING OR
REDEVELOPING TUESDAY EVENING AND NIGHT AS TEMPERATURES FALL BELOW
FREEZING ONCE AGAIN.
ICE ACCUMULATIONS MAY BE HIGHER FOR LOCATIONS FROM CROCKETT TO
CORRIGAN AND THIS COULD HAVE MORE SIGNIFICANT IMPACTS THAN JUST
ICING ON BRIDGES. A WINTER STORM WARNING MAY BE POSSIBLE FOR
HOUSTON...TRINITY AND POLK COUNTIES.

Thought this was interesting from the Houston NWS:

We've dropped to 31.9 at Heath - so we might start seeing ice on elevated surfaces before too long.

You got the percentages right but the P-type wrong. Your local NWS office (HGX) has it at all rain. Low Tuesday night will be 31 degrees but the precip should be over by then. And the predicted atmospheric profile does not support snow in the Katy area.

Any forecasts under my name are to be taken with a grain of salt. Get your best forecasts from the National Weather Service and National Hurricane Center.
Re: Re:
TheProfessor wrote:My only problem with that is that at the last minute its very hard for people, schools, and businesses to make changes in their schedule. To me it is like a severe outbreak at night. The radar is indicating a tornado with a strong hook echo signature, but the storm spotters can't see it. So a warning is not put out in fear of a false alarm. But then the tornado hits a few transformers and exposes itself, but because of the hesitation it is now too close to a town and those people don't have time to prepare for it.
When I say the last minute, I am referring to the 3-4am time period. Yes, it's inconvenient for everyone who may have to wake up, and find out school/work is cancelled during the 5-6am period, but what can you do? If calling it late can lead to an accurate forecast with relatively mild inconveniences, I don't see any fault in that. That's a better route than expecting them to call it 6-12 hrs beforehand and having their forecast bust. If the least convenience is having people wake up, and then going back to sleep, in the name of accuracy, I think that's an inconvenience we should take. Otherwise you get varying degrees of bust such as Atlanta's fiasco or Austin's bust this past Friday.
It's unfair of the public to expect meteorologists to nail temp profiles 6-12+ hours out and make a call when today has shown the degree of difficulty involved in these forecasts, even in the 6hr range, especially when a few degrees make a huge difference in impacts. We should all seriously lighten up on the criticism of the promets.

Haha, thanks for the fans Screamer! Unfortunately, our Olympians are 10 time zones away from me so I can't control their actions. I'll tell you what though, if 57 agrees to my truce for the next two weeks, if you don't mind turning those fans off, I'll try to send some of 57's warmth your way

Dang, I would love to remember what 82 felt like, we haven't hit 40 since January (we should be in the 60s by the weekend though).

Is there a very light drizzle or mist where you guys are up north? Not on radar.

Yes it's a pesky, freezing mist, that never tapered off during the day.. (I wouldn't say "very" light)
And it actually can be seen on radar as light returns.
