When a storm is "bombing out" it is intensifying rapidly.

Right now it doesn't look nearly as impressive. I hope this continues. Wonder what they're dropping in it??

I'm almost more concerned about strength now that it's weaker since it will have time to be intensifying before landfall. We typically see storms look very impressive at this point only to weaken and hopefully this isn't the opposite.

From that visible still shot HURAKAN posted Gus still looks like it has the type of structure and convection that could power up again.

Blustery wind gusts here. Sun came out.

IMO something that is probably overlooked is that gustav (duh) WESTERN side is over the LOOP current and her eastern side is not, pretty clear to see, definitely a factor in her appearance.

does anyone have the know how to overlay her satelite loop with the loop current position i think it will tell quite a tale. very very much would be appreciated thankyou

Thank you squarethecircle and dhweather for the explanation. That was my guess but I also thought it could possibly mean rapid weakening.

They are blowing a big fan from the desert southwest into :) NOAA and NASA are collaborating on it with Haliburton having constructed it in Roswell.

I looked up Cut Off, Louisiana where poster Tim is from. It's way down in the Mississippi Delta near the coast SE of Houma. Last place you would want to ride out a strong hurricane on this track.

Actually as fast as he is moving, he will be lucky to have 6 hours left before he leaves the loop current....

Just looking at pictures, convection is starting to pop and organize. I think it's strengthening, but slowly at the moment. Probably will be held at current intensity but then upped at 5 pm at current state.

It still appears it is slightly East of the forecast points...may have to make yet another track adjustment at 11...

Am I nuts or does the Global Hydrology and Climate Center infrared show the eye clearing out?

i know DUH, but seriously i think this is a huge plus that he can't get his eastern side over the loop

It's getting chatty in here again. Today is a critical day with people seeking meaningful information on here. Let's keep the posts to things of substance and refrain from emoticons, jokes, etc. Thank you.
