Re: Texas winter wx thread (2009-2010)
I have a question. Most of the models are showing snow developing in northwest Texas and beginning to move east-south-east. However, the snow and precipitation for that matter appears to disappear over central and southcentral Texas, before reappearing in southeast Texas. Why is this the case? I have heard that there is not enough moisture, but isn't the same true for northwest Texas? In addition, wouldn't the shortwave and its associated dynamics lead to more precipitation? Do models have difficulty handling precipitation due to the dynamics of a shortwave?

Cantore's coming to Houston? Great, that pretty much wipes out anyone's chance of snow east of I-35!

Maybe another thundersnow event caught on tape? Hope things work out for you guys in Central TX. Long range looks interesting for many in TX, but we'll save that for another time.

I still can't believe that the 12Z GFS shows possible 3-5 inches of snow for portions of Harris county tomorrow afternoon and evening and the 18Z run is pretty much the same.
Looks like all the ingredients are comming together nicely for an amazing event for SE Texas.

The OCM said that Jim will be looking for the best spot in Houston or nearby that city

Come on down!! Or at least send Lucy!Portastorm wrote:jeff wrote:gboudx wrote:Radar returns along the Red River appearing on the DFW and OKC radars. Anyone up that way confirm what p-type it is, and if it's reaching the ground?
I doubt this is reaching the ground...Look at the cloud sheild advancing rapidly up the TX coast and impressive CAA ongoing over C TX.
Oh yeah ... this one's looking more and more like the 2004 event. Most places in the metro area here today couldn't even reach 50 degrees and that was with bright sun ... now we have a cloud shield advancing across the city rapidly and the temps should start to fall.
Yep, just like 2004 ... the coast will get snow. I get clouds and cold in Austin. Grrrr!

No bud ... you don't want me down there. I'll screw up your chances! But I will tell Lucy that a bunch of my friends want to go kicking tomorrow in H-town.

Not sure if anyone has noticed or not, but the 00z NAM paints a nice little swath over the Austin area. Maybe there is some hope after all for us folks in Austin.

I dunno double D ... that swath at 18 hours on the 0z NAM looks more like its over the Hill Country. But at this point, why quibble, right?!

We're getting to the point where the RUC model is useful as well as radar out west.

Re: Texas winter wx thread (2009-2010)
Maybe it's just cause i'm not near as experienced as some, but some of the moisture tracks just look strange to me. I mean it certainly looks like there will be more moisture on the coast, yes. But it just seems like the models do weird stuff with the moisture over the hill country, austin/san antonio.
Probably makes no sense I know
but the models have just looked strange to me in that one area over the past few days.

Re: Texas winter wx thread (2009-2010)
I see TWC has The lower half of Texas at 1-3" of snow. Very exciting.. One concern.. My husband will be leaving a rig via helicopter first thing tomorrow morning and driving from Lousiana to Deer Park. I hope he makes it home and not get stranded...
