I felt badly about being just a guest... so, here I am, one of the 309 lurkers. I've been glued to this board since 11 this morning. Ruining my day off. I'm just north of Boston 5 miles from the coast and quite attentive to the tract of Irene. Not being a tough guy at all. Thank all of you for being here and helping me assess the future.

I'm hearing the number of 56 million in the way of 50+ mph winds sustained.

I'll post this link in the Northeast prep thread too, but I just found an awesome resource.

http://crisislanding.appspot.com/

For NYC city especially, it will show projected storm surge zones, evacuation areas, ConEd power outages, etc.

Type your location in the white search box to get a marker on the map, then click on various menu options on the right side of the page.

AWESOME INFO.

I needed this tonight as I have a close friend who has just moved to Hoboken 2 weeks ago, and I have been trying to convince her how bad the flooding will be there. This map was indispensable.

Nope, the 11PM held at 100 MPH Cat2. Where did you get your information from?

hehe, well I kept refreshing the screen at http://wunderground.com and it showed 95mph, but the hurricane symbol sill showed cat2...Anyway, so I figured they would correct the symbol. Well, then the next time I refreshed it, it showed winds: 100 MPH, so just a typo that was quickly corrected by them. I went back and quickly corrected my original post.

not the first time someone was burned by the slow refresh of wunderground during this storm...got burned twice on old graphics from them as well

Just like Jon Snow..."I know nothing" except what I know, and most of what I know is gathered by the fine people of the NHC

CNN just had deputy director of NHC on...Hurricane/Tropical storm winds in NE could last over 12 hours. Specifically speaking of New York/Long Island

Glad you got some good information. If one of our members doesn't have a link to any resource on the net concerning tropical systems I would be shocked. The core fo us that started the board have been together since 96-97 and finally started S2K in 2002. The resources that people come up with surprise me every year :-)
