Still got deep convection firing up near the center but clearly seems to be holding steady right now, odds of this reaching hurricvane status seems to be sliding somewhat again given its probably only got 6hrs or so left over water.

Sounds like you guys in West Palm and Homestead have some critters taking shelter or getting out of Dodge, not very comforting. This afternoon I saw our usual family of cardinals in the front yard, even more swallowtails munching, and plenty of anoles darting around. Makes me wonder if the latest GDFL model is correct and Fay is going to track south of us and out into the Atlantic.

Getting prepare is the right thing to do. If nothing happens, you didn't lose anything except a little time. Is better to prepare for nothing than not to prepare and something happens.

A ragged eye does seem to be forming. I seriously think they'll find hurricane force winds in the NE quad, now that I've seen that radar loop.

Over-Hype, As Usual

#9129 Postby tropicstorm » Mon Aug 18, 2008 7:52 pm

Well, looks like Fay is a bust. No strengthening or intensification tonight - this TS looks pretty weak and ragged, to say the least. I have been keeping an eye on the TV weather reporting all day - and, as recently as a couple of hours ago, the expert forecasters were predicting 8-12 inches of rain on Tuesday in the Orlando area with possible wind gusts up to 80 mph!!! Give me a break! Fay is a very weak tropical system that is dying a slow death - and, it appears now that this TS will come ashore south of Ft. Meyers, probably somewhere over the Everglades. Fay will traverse the state to the east of Orlando - and, I'm betting on about 15 mph winds with a possible 1-2 inches of rain on the west side of this "storm". I'm just glad Charlie Crist and all of his emergency management teams were in place today spending the taxpayers $$ and wasting a lot of time over nothing. And, please don't respond with the "it's better to be safe than sorry" routine - I've seen this stupid over-hyped scenario over nothing Florida tropical storms for too many years. But, I'm sure that the folks at Home Depot and Lowe's were very happy today with all of their generator sales.

I hope you are wrong about the stair steps-nothing personal!!! :D

NBC-2 in Ft. Myers has one of the BEST meteorologists (Robert Van Winkle) I have ever seen. Instead of steady streaming and constantly repeating themselves, he and Chris Lambert are coming on air during the breaks in the Olympic coverage. He stated that Fay is moving north at 9 with occasional increases in forward speed. He anticipates landfall around Everglades City-about 20 miles south of Naples' south end. Marco Island is also a distinct possibility. He must be detecting a NE jog down the road as the official track has it coming in closer to Naples.

That would be the best solution for us personally but poor Everglades has been hit hard over the years and floods easily.
We have had a steady, rather hard rainfall with moderate winds for the past 45 minutes-about like a normal summer afternoon storm. I just hope she is East of us in North Naples when she finally gets here!

Good luck everyone-stay safe.

If you could have forecasted it better, let me know.

1: 60 MPH is not "weak". It is enough to uplift trees and damage mobile homes.
2: The emergency management plans were for the saftey of Florida. Are you saying you would rather people die next time?
3: Fay is not dieing. Her pressure continues to lower.

Well Tropicstorm you just lost any credibility you had with this post. I don't see you holding a met degree. I don't know if you have an imaginary world where every forecast is 100% right, but in the real world they aren't. And BTW, RL3AO's post makes you look sillier.

I think the false NE turn was simple as the ULL interacting with a contracting center with a small CDO. Just breezy here with no rain or occasional sprinkles.

I don't want to hear it. It's my 32nd birthday (yes, happy bday to me) today and I was supposed to have dinner at the in-laws house here in Miami. However, hubby and I erred on the side of caution and cancelled the plans. So, now, we're sitting here, on my bday with a great breeze outside and a bust of a storm. But, you know what, I'm happy we did that because we could've ended up in a tornado or strengthening storm or something. Yep, it stinks that it's practically a bust intensity wise but prediction is not an exact science yet. Until it is we'll have storms like this.....

This thread is of no use whatsoever. If you think you can do a better job, go to the NHC and prove it. They would be happy to offer you a job. If not, please, WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT.
