Advisory 071908

Bertha still going strong in the northern Atlantic while Tropical Storm Cristobal develops in the western Sargasso Sea. An area of interest persists in the western Caribbean Sea.

Northern Atlantic…Tropical Storm Bertha. Bertha continues towards two and a half weeks as a Tropical Cyclone. She is maintaining 70mph as she continues to trudge into colder waters She should begin transitioning to extratropical status before accelerating into and hitting Iceland. The energizer bunny should soon begin to lose steam.

Western Sargasso Sea…Tropical Storm Cristobal. TS Cristobal formed today off the Georgia coast and is now moving toward the Carolina coast. I estimate Cristobal to be around 45mph and I do not think that he will intensify much above 50mph. Cristobal will come very close to the barrier islands of North Carolina.

Rain is the most potential threat from Cristobal in the Carolinas up to the Delmarva with 3-6” in spots nearest the track. Tropical Storm force winds are likely in the coastal parts of North Carolina.

There is a Tropical Storm Warning from South Santee River, SC to the NC/V border. Those in coastal Carolinas should expect tropical storm force winds with heavy rains at times. Make preparations for a moderate tropical storm.
Western Caribbean…Invest 94L. 94L still moving wnw through the Caribbean and is still slowly developing. Hurricane Hunters did not find a closed low today, but I expect that they find one tomorrow, which should bring 94L up to Tropical Storm Dolly. 94L will continue to move toward Mexico and further into the GOM where it could become a potential threat to Texas. Where it makes landfall in Mexico and possibly in Texas is remaining to be seen.
