Blizzard of '78 fond memories thread-K&U Cat 4 storm

I missed 5 days of Catholic school as an eight grader at St. Martin of Tours in Amityville, NY.

Syosset, NY, not terribly far from Massapequa

I am not the EdM who runs that web page.

Kocin and Uccellini rank it one of only 9 storms awarded a top tier Cat 4 or Cat 5 snowstorm rating (Crippling or Extreme). A Cat 4, like the famous 1888 Blizzard.

UK or Ohio Valley "Blizzard of 78" (checked Google) memories also most welcome, even if not my blizzard.

5 glorious days, a full week, no school. Right about 2 feet where we lived, parts of CT and RI got over 4 feet. NYC got about 18 inches.

When one goes to Cathoic school, where many a woman like Rosie O'Donnell who grew up pre-Stonewall, 1940s and 1950s, wound up as nuns, well, a week off was wonderful.

In defense of the Dominican sisters, my nuns 1st through 3rd grade were all very nice ladies. Perhaps they intentionally reserved the children hating nuns for the older grades.

I remember that storm. I wasn't living on Long Island at that time though but I believe we did get some snow from it here in NJ. Little did I know that 1979, 1981 and 1983 were lurking in the wings.

81 and 83- gone to Texas.

But I remember two big 1978 storms, a very cold winter the year before that, and Hurricane Belle.
