Coast Guard: Fishermen trapped on Lake Erie ice

CLEVELAND -- The Coast Guard says several hundred people are trapped on a slab of ice about 8 miles wide that has broken free and is floating away from the Ohio shoreline of Lake Erie.

Coast Guard Petty Officer George Degener says several ships and helicopters from Toledo and Marblehead, Ohio, are attempting to rescue the people from the ice floe.

Degener says there are no reports of anybody injured or in the water.

He says the Coast Guard was notified late Saturday morning.

Rescue: Ice Fisherman Trapped On Lake Erie Sparks Massive Rescue Effort

CLEVELAND - The U.S. Coast Guard, and multiple state and local agencies are attempting to rescue several hundred people stranded on an ice floe in western Lake Erie near Oak Harbor, Ohio.

Approximately 300-500 people are reported to be on the ice flow. The call for help came into the Coast Guard at approximately 10:45 a.m.

Responding agencies include: U.S. Coast Guard Air Stations Detroit, Traverse City, Mich., and Elizabeth City, N.C.; U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw, U.S. Coast Guard Stations Toledo, Ohio, Belle Isle, Mich., St. Clair Shores, Mich., and Marblehead, Ohio; Canadian Coast Guard; Ohio State Patrol, Monroe County Sheriff; Jervis, Carol and Washington Townships; Toledo Lifeflight.

Rescuers are staging out of Crane Creek State Park in Oak Harbor, Ohio.

"We don't know why the people were on the ice," said Lt. David French, Ninth Coast Guard District Public Affairs Officer. "Right now our primary goal is to safely remove all the people from the ice floe."

As of 1:25 p.m., 35 people have been safely removed from the ice floe.

WTOL in Toledo reports:

LUCAS COUNTY, OH (WTOL) - Emergency crews are responding to calls for help from a large group of ice fisherman trapped on Lake Erie. The fisherman are spread out over a large piece of ice near Crane Creek State Park. That's near the Ottawa and Lucas County line.

We're now told only 60 to 100 people are still on the ice. Emergency crews have been using hovercraft to bring back 3 to 4 people at a time.

The Ottawa County Sheriff originally estimated 175-300 people were trapped on the ice. He thinks the fisherman encountered a crack in the ice and put some sort of plank or bridge up to cross it. Then they became trapped as high winds and warm temperatures may have caused the crack to shift.

A Coast Guard helicopter is on the scene. Life Flight has also been called to help get a head count of the people.

One fisherman's wife called WTOL to say that he was with around 200 others on the ice. He says nobody was in the water.

No injuries have been reported.
