WMO Hurricane Committee retires Gustav, Ike, Paloma, Alma
WMO site for the 31st session of the Regional Association IV Hurricane Committee in Nassau, Bahamas in April: http://www.wmo.int/pages/prog/www/tcp/M ... index.html
Each member country will have their individual reports put up once submitted. So far two have been submitted. The British Caribbean Territories and Canada have both submitted their reports, so they're now available to download.
I found it interesting that the BCT reported no deaths despite the damage done to the Cayman Islands and to the Turks and Caicos Islands. Canada's report meanwhile says Hurricane Kyle made landfall in Canada within three hours of five years to the exact time Juan did.

The United States has now released its country report, and the NHC has also put up a summary of the season to the meeting documents page.

For those who can understand it, Mexico's Spanish language report is now available (linked directly above). Their English one should be out soon.

Re: RA IV Hurricane Committee 31st session in Nassau 20-24 Apr
Cuba has just posted their report: only 7 deaths, but nearly $10B in damage.
Fay - minimal damage
Gustav - $2.1B damage, wind gusts confirmed at 340 km/h (212 mph) and verified
Ike - $7.3B damage, 7 deaths - 2 direct, 5 indirect (new overall total of $32B)
Paloma - $300M damage (should ease any retirement case)

Re: WMO Hurricane Committee meeting begins today
If the meeting begins today, wouldn't the various weather agencies of the countries involved already have decided which names they will ask to be retired? At what point in the meeting are these requests delivered?

We should hopefully know by Friday if they publicly announce it right after the meeting.

I believe that a replacement name is always replaced by a name of the same ethnicity regardless of what country it hits. So Gustav will be replaced by another Frenchman's name beginning with G...anything but Gustav, Georges, or Gaston essentially....and Ike will be replaced with Ian, because I don't think there are any other male I names left.

Possibilities for Gustav: Gable, Gage, Garth, Gaylord, Germain, Gillett, Gjorn, Glanville, Gouverneur, Granger, Grant, Granville, Greville, Griswold, Grosvenor, Guerrant, Guillaume, Gunther
Possibilities for Ike: Ichabod, Idan, Ido, Ilan, Ira, Isaiah, Ishmael, Issachar, Itai, Itamar, Iyar

Gustav is not the normal French spelling. That would be "Gustave".
And it hasn't been empirically true that names have always been replaced by others of the same "ethnicity". Just six years ago Isabel, a Spanish form, was replaced by Ida, a name which is much more of an American/English name than it is a Spanish or Latin American one.
I'd go with Guy, Gary, or Gavin for Gustav myself.
Ian would be a good replacement for Ike, but Hurricane Bill has several others that would be good.
I think Perla would be a good replacement for Paloma if that one is retired.

Those are good choices. I'd replace Gustav with Germain and Ike with Ingram personally.
Gustav and Ike are pretty much certain to be retired, while other less likely names (from highest to lowest chance IMO) are Hanna (60% chance), Paloma (50%), Dolly (25%), Fay (20%) and Omar (15%). The rest have less than 5% chance of retirement.

France didn't like the name Frances. Germany won't like Germain.

Gustav, Ike, and Paloma were retired, to be replaced with Gonzalo, Isaias, and Paulette.
Alma in the EPAC was retired, replaced with Amanda.

Well, that certainly should get rid of the idea that they have to replace names with others from the same ethnicity. The replaced a Scandinavian name and an English nickname form with two Spanish male names, and they replaced a Spanish female name with a French one.

As a name expert I think this also shows the lack of knowledge and imagination in terms of names on the part of the meteorologists who are coming up with these things. Why on earth did these people put Paulette on the 2014 list when they already have Paula on the 2010 list, and they just got rid of Pauline from the EPAC list 12 years ago? Don't they realize there are lots of other female "P" names commonly used in all the countries of the Atlantic basin besides the female derivatives of Paul?

It's not just the females. There is Paul in the EPAC, and Pablo in the Atlantic, which I believe is the Spanish form of Paul.
Think they have a thing for the name?
