A Painted WHAT?

#1 Postby abajan » Mon Jul 13, 2009 11:31 am

The other day, while watching Tru TV, I saw a lady get reported for driving through a "painted gore". Her reaction went something like, "I did what? :?: " My reaction was pretty similar because I'd never heard of a painted gore in my life (although I see them all the time and knew what the lady did was indeed wrong. And I've been driving for several years)!

Just out of curiosity, without cheating by googling the term, how many of you know what a painted gore is?

Well, this was new to me too, but I looked "gore" up in my Oxford English Dictionary and the meaning "a triangular piece of land" and variants on that like "a strip of land between two properties" goes all the way back to Old English - first citation 893 AD.

A painted gore therefore would be aking to a traffic island usually triangular in shape that is painted on the pavement rather than built up. No relation to Al

As an civil engineering designer, I have designed more than one painted gore in my life!! Normally painted gores are seen at on and off ramps and where there is merging roads/traffic.
