I NEED SOME COMPUTER HELP....

#1 Postby Guest » Sat Aug 23, 2003 4:09 pm

Things aren't looking too good on my end of the computer. I have several problems.

1. What does the Win32us do? I found this file on my machine and don't know what its for?

2. Since this virsus has hit me - I can't play solitare on my computer - when I drag the cards across the screen it leave shadows.

I have ran virus scan 4 times on my computer and nothing is coming up infected - what do I do?

Any advice, suggestions or diagnosis from the experts would be greatly appreciated...

I have looked in my system for that file and I can't find it on mine. Have you tried hitting CTL ALT DELETE? A window pops up on the screen and tells you exactly which programs are running. That is how my trojan file was found last year.

Is your virus protection up to date? If not, see if you can update it, then run a scan.

ticka! Win32us is a trojan that uses your computer to dial 900 numbers without your permission. If you have a firewall, you need to block it. I am not real sure why it is not showing up in your virus scan.

Once you guys get these trojans and stuff on your computer, it's too late. You need to wipe your hard drive and rebuild your systems as some of these cannot be removed. And once they get on, they install other bad stuff that our virus software can't detect. If you don't do that, your computer will not function correctly from now on. Reinstall all of your software including the operating system and applications. Hopefully you've periodically backed up our system to a zip drive or something because all your files have to go. Never keep any important data on your computer as you'll probably have to do this several times over the years. We all rebuild. Especially after the last two weeks. Good luck.

Very True!

My wife had something funky going on with her pooter last week. I updated and virus scanned until I was blue in the face.

Whatever it was would freeze IE and Word. ??

I normally reformat and reinstall our OS's about every 6 months or so. I am a packrat you see, and can fill a hard drive pretty quickly.

Anyway, I formatted and reinstalled XP on hers and it runs great !

lol, it's like changing oil and rotating the tires on the auto. :D

Ticka, what OS do you use?

You can rid the dialer trojan though. You can do this by getting a copy of Adaware 6.0 or some other type program like that. It will remove trojan dialers without having to wipe out or re-formatt your hard drive.

Now the trojan I had was not as easy. I had to wipe out my whole system.

Construction... that sounds like the trojan I had. It was a pain in the neck and I wanted to chunk mine out the window!! It was a trojan in the name of iexplore and was running in the background undetected.

Trojans and viruses are different. Antivirus will not remove trojans....they're there for viruses. I have Norton's Antivirus and I also have Trojan Remover. Trojan Remover deals with just Trojans.

You can run a trial program of Trojan Remover. Just go to http://www.simplysup.com. Click on Program Details and click on the link in the text to download. The owner, Nigel is a really nice guy if you have problems and has been working with antitrojan removers for several years.

How did you get rid of it? How did you find it? I guess that I need to do a little more homework on trojans. Are they delivered via email?

Constructionwx I have 2indows98 O/S. I don't know enough about computers to rebuild mine and reformat. If I did that I would have to pay someone to come in and do it for me.

CajunMama - I am going to download this program and run it on my computer. Hopefully it will help - if not then I will be shutting down my computer here at home and waiting until I can afford to have someone come and fix it.

I took it to my friend Bob who works on computers and is a technician for Sears. When I was on the phone with him he told me to hit control alt delete and tell him what programs were running. He freaked when I said there was an iexplore running. I took it to him and he re-formatted it. He saved alot of my files to floppy or burned them to CD. All my saved pics had to go because those files were infected. Yes, it was deposited through email. It disguised itself very well and I opened the attachment like a dummy. After that, stuff pics kept popping up all over my computer. Then, my IE kept freezing up. After about 2 weeks of this frustration, I called Bob. lol. It took him a day to fix it.

ticka... all you really need to do is uninstall all your programs. Then use the CD's to re-install. Do you have the windows 98 CD to reinstall windows? I am running windows 98 too and most of the prob was fixed when he re-installed windows.

I would back up anything that is important and wipe the drive clean. I would seperate anything that you back up from your pooter until you have it back up and running with the latest anti-virus updates. Before you copy any of the old files back to your computer, I would scan the media that you have it backed up to.

It can be a pain sometimes, but as Corona mentioned, if you don't clean the whole thing and start from scratch you will never be confident that the bug/trojan/virus is gone.

Here is the Knowledge base artical from Microsoft.

The first time I reformatted a hard drive I was scared to death. Just knew I was going to screw something up :-) But after I was done, (it will take at least 1/2 a day) it ran like it came out of the box !! And besides, what can you hurt? If you get stuck, just start over. It's not like the pooter can take an asprin and call ya in the morning :-)

Oops! I guess that is what some trojans do - try to call out. lol

How ironic! I have been having problems with my computer for a month or so.
I have been posting about it in "Tips, Help, and Tests."

I have been running AdAware several times during the last month to see if the problem I have been having with IE (haven't been able to use Microsoft Word for over about three months). I understand that you have to be patient when scanning files on AdAware, but the program seemed to freeze and in some cases actually did.

However, yesterday, my brother was over and did a scan and for some reason it found 45 to 50 files that we deleted when it was finished scanning.

Now hopefully this was actually a trojan so my computer will not continue to not respond every so often, not to mention freeze up especially after clicking "Tools" in my toolbar at the top of the screen or other features there.
