At 11 AM EDT, Tropical Storm Jimena is now a hurricane in the central east Pacific with maximum sustained surface winds of 75 mph. Jimena is centered at 16.8 north, 136.4 west. Movement is west at about 16 mph and the minimum central pressure is 987 mb. Hawaii should continue to monitor the progress of this system as Jimena could hit the Hawaiian Islands Monday or Tuesday of next week as a weak hurricane. The center is projected to be just south of the big island, but not by much. Effects will still be felt from Hurricane Jimena over Hawaii with heavy outer rain bands and dangerous rip currents along with large battering waves.
Fabian still has maximum winds of 60 mph in the east central tropical Atlantic. The 11 AM coordinates place Fabain at latitude 15.5 north, longitude 43.7 west or about 1175 miles east of the lesser Antillies. Fabian has decreased it's forward speed and is now moving west at 16 mph. This motion is expected to continue and a further decrease in forward speed remains possible in the next day or two. Maximum sustained winds are 60 mph with higher gusts. Fabian is forecast to become a hurricane in the next day or so. Minimum central pressure is still 997 mb or 29.44 inches.
No watches or warnings are in effect for the northern Lesser Antillies yet. But that can't be ruled out either. At the very least, there will be higher than normal waves and dangerous rip currents to deal with. That alone is a dangerous situation, even outside this tropical storm/potential hurricane. The official long range forecast calls for winds 95 mph with higher gusts just north of the Lesser Antillies in days 3-5. So Fabian still has potential and the US east coast needs to watch this one also and factor this in next week.
If that wasn't enough, another wave has moved off the west African coast and that too could develop into something in the next few days.
In the northwest Caribbean, a promising wave of note. It's forecast to reach the southern Gulf Of Mexico and it could show signs of tropical organization and thus become a tropical entity. Gulf coastal residents should watch this one next week just in case that verfies.
That is the latest on the 11 am update. Lots to talk about today. Another update at 5 pm edt
