August 29th and storms brought to you by the letter K

#1 Postby senorpepr » Tue Aug 28, 2012 11:38 pm

...Seventh August storm forms...

The next five names to be used as: Leslie, Michael, Nadine, Oscar, Patty

Below are some statistics for the eleventh named storm of the season since 1950. Additionally, listed are the eleventh storm from each season since 1851 and a look back to storms named Kirk.

*** Please note: The following data encompasses data utilizing today's standard for naming storms. Subtropical storms are included, but depressions aren't. In addition, the dates reflect when a tropical storm reached that status rather than depression status. Adjustments have been made to include unnamed storms where in today's standard it would have been named. Therefore, if an unnamed storm forms before the A-storm, this database would assume the unnamed storm is A, and the real A-storm is B.

And as we watch 98L (40% currently), it's nice to know that Lee was the earliest named Tropical Storm 12 on August 31, 2005.

Lee was second earliest. The record is held by Luis 1995, which formed 29 August 1995, 00Z.

The one time 2012 actually forms one ahead of the 2005 pace!
