GOES-13 back into operational service!
If you are seeing that the images of the Atlantic are in dark is because there has been an outage of Goes-13 sattelite. They are trying to fix it but there is no timetable for it to return to operation.

I believe we will only get polar orbiting satellite images for the time being. I don't believe there is another geosynchronous satellite for the Atlantic, outside of the East Atlantic coverage of European satellites.

Re: GOES-13 out of service
GOES-14 is in orbit undergoing testing before putting into storage. It should be available soon if GOES-13 is dead.

I'm in TX but it's killing me too. I was able to find this, but I don't know how much help it'll be for East Coast peeps: http://www.ssec.wisc.edu/data/geo/index ... thod=flash.
It claims to be GOES 14, but as I've never viewed images from that satellite, I don't know for sure what I'm looking at.

That's the new GOES-14 satellite. It's currently in "storage mode" over 105W longitude. If GOES-13 proves to be dead for good, then GOES-14 would need to be moved east to take its place.

In the interim though, it would appear to be a somewhat viable alternative. I mean it is better than nothing, right?
I do get what you mean though about it needing to move east if GOES-13 is dead.
Does Storage Mode mean it's not fully functional?

Re: GOES-13 out of service
Typically, there is an active GOES-East satellite and at least one other satellite in what is called "in-orbit storage". In the event of a catastrophic failure of the current GOES-East satellite, the satellite in storage is repositioned to the correct longitude and activated. Before doing that, the GOES team are going to attempt to fix the GOES-13 satellite. They don't want to give up on GOES-13 unless there's absolutely no chance of fixing it, as there is no backup in orbit for GOES-14 should it fail.

Thats GOES 12 - Full Disk. Probably the best we're going to get for now.

NOAASatellites on Twitter: "We are preparing to switch to GOES-14 to provide GOES-East coverage. GOES-13 will remain in safe mode."
"GOES-14 is assuming the Routine GOES-East Schedule and will be transmitted through the GOES-13 GVAR beginning at ~17:45 UTC "
Doesn't sound good. Two years in operational mode as GOES East is not a good record.
GOES 14 takes over in 45 minutes.

Update#14
OSPO is preparing to switch to GOES-14 to provide GOES-East coverage.
We are running test GOES east schedules on the standby GOES-14
(currently out of storage for annual inclination maneuver). GOES-13
will remain in safe mode while the Sounder and Imager Instruments anomaly is
being investigated.

This is actually fairly crazy. In my years of paying attention to weather, I don't recall ever having seen this with GOES Satellites before. I could be wrong though. If I wasn't pulling up Satellite loops & viewing them all day, I would not have noticed, especially once GOES-14 is moved into its new position.

Re: GOES-13 out of service - GOES 14 taking over East coverage
Update#15
GOES-15 is remaining in the Full Disk GOES-West Schedule and GOES-14 is
assuming the Routine GOES-East Schedule at 17:45 UTC. GOES-13 will
remain in safe mode while the spacecraft anomaly is being investigated.
Details: GOES-15 is remaining in the Full Disk GOES-West Schedule and
GOES-14 is assuming the Routine GOES-East Schedule and will be
transmitted through the GOES-13 GVAR beginning at 17:45 UTC. There are
some differences between the Routine GOES-13 schedule that was in
operations until the safe-mode anomaly began on September 23, 2012 and
the Routine GOES-14 schedule that is beginning today, September

Re: GOES-13 out of service - GOES 14 taking over East coverage
I wonder how long it took them to move the satellite. Also, I notice you're in PR. Does the following give you a better viewing angle: http://www.ghcc.msfc.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/post-goes?cycloneye wrote:Update#15
