It may seem a rather stupid question, but what is an ICQ number and do I have to have one?

ICQ is an old IM (instant message) client, one of the very first introduced, followed soon after by AIM and then others. I think ICQ was first, but I'm not 100% sure.
IM is optional, just a way for other to contact you if you like. Seems like it's also a great way to receive a lot of spam.
