Why do I have to be manually approved?
Why do I have to be manually approved before being able to register? Also why is storms/local obs behind the paywall to register?

Manual approval is to prevent spammers. Your second sentence makes no sense, we don't have a paywall but we do protect the site with a registration process that requires one of us to approve. You can read anything on the site without registering.
