HURRICANE/TROPICAL STORM WATCHES/WARNINGS AND ADVISORIES
A hurricane watch is now in effect as of 11 am edt for the mid atlantic coastal waters from Little River Inlet, South Carolina northward to Chicoteague, Virginia. This includes the Pamlico and Albemarle Sounds, The Chesapeake Bay south of North Beach and the Tidal Potomac River. A hurricane watch means that the hurricane conditions are possible within 36 hours time. A hurricane warning means that the hurricane conditions are expected within 24 hours or less. Hurricane warnings maybe needed for these areas tonight into Wednesday as Isabel continues her approach.
A tropical storm watch is in effect from Little River Inlet, SC down to South Santee River, SC.
There are also brand new tropical storm watches in effect this afternoon north of Chicoteague, Virginia up to Little Egg Inlet, New Jersey including the Delaware Bay and the Chesapeake Bay north of North Beach, Maryland. A tropical storm watch means that the tropical storm conditions are possible within 36 hours. A tropical storm warning means that the tropical storm conditions ae expected within 24 hour or less.
In addition a heavy surf advisory is in effect from Deerfiel Beach, Florida up to Currituck Beach, North Island.
Hurricane warnings are likely to be issued at 11 pm edt this evening for portions of the hurricane watch area.
8 PM EDT ADVISORY
At 8 PM EDT Hurricane Isabel is continuing to deepen with falling central pressures near the center of circulation. The center of Isabel was located about 545 miles south southeast of Cape Hatteras, NC. Movement is north northwest at 8 mph. Maximum sustained winds are 105 mph with higher gusts. Hurricane force winds extend outward 160 miles from the center while tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 275 miles from the center. Further strengthening is likely before landfall and Isabel could become a category 3 hurricane before landfall.
Waves are already 20 feet in high swells just off the north carolina coast and that is moving towards the coast even as we speak. Cat 4-5 type wave action is expected aong the north carolina coast late tonite through tomorrow. Despite the fact waves are high now, it will cause coastal flooding and major beach erosion well ahead of the storm tomorrow.
Minimum central pressure is down to 956 millibars or 28.23 inches!!!
Another update at 11 PM EDT. Warnings are likely at 11 pm, stay tuned.
