What is the best way to protect your plants from a frost and/or freeze? I have heard of several methods, but I thought I would get your opinions on which way is best. KOW's topic reminded to pose the question for the green thumbs. :D

Well ther are a number of things depending on what and how cold.

First let me say Plastic alone is NOT good.

They sell frost blankets that will only work depending on how hard of a freeze/frost you have.

Blankets work pretty good.

A mulch like straw or hay can help.

Irrigate before.

Can irrigate during if it's not going to freeze the pipes.

They make foam covers for plants..A mulch with it works well.

Of course heat pots for like critical crops.

It really depends on what you want to insulate and the expected conditions as to how far you go to protect/extend then from frost or a hard freeze.

Thanks Aquawind. I am really thinking about this for the spring when I don't want the plants to die. In the fall there really isn't much chance... eventually they will freeze or get covered in snow. THANKS! :D I will look into some of your suggestions. They really helped.

Garrett, I use newspapers, held down around
the sprounting plants by heavy rocks. If you
forget to take them off when the sun comes up,
the paper is still "breathable", and, won't hurt
your plants.

We bring a lot of ours inside! Other than that, with most of the plants we just let nature take it's course! Some of them my mom saves with the frost blankets.

Thanks for the info. everyone. It has been helpful. Can you buy frost blankets at Wal-Mart or do you have to go somewhere like Lowe's?

You will probably have to go to a Nursery to get Frost Blankets..or online.

When I said Blankets work pretty good I was actually referring to normal Bed Blankets. The Thicker and Less Air flow through will retain the heat better. You could wet the blankets for added protection.

Water the area well either way.

I just typed Frost Blankets in a search window..12,833 hits.. :o 8-)

I think that burlap is also used to to cover plants.
