Natural Gas Explosion - Galveston

#1 Postby GalvestonDuck » Wed Oct 22, 2003 12:41 pm

My lights flickered while I was at lunch and I wondered what was going on. Came back to my office and someone had emailed me asking if I had pics of the explosion. I asked around and someone else mentioned that the lights flickered here at the hospital also.

Thanks, Stooge! :)

Hopefully there are no injuries. I'll give it a few hours for more info to come out before I post an update (if needed).

No injuries:

Galveston gas line bursts into 100-foot flames
By RUTH RENDON
Copyright 2003 Houston Chronicle

GALVESTON - Crews clearing land for a new criminal justice center struck a natural gas line this morning, causing an explosion and sending flames 100 feet into the air. There were no injuries.

Galveston Police Lt. Mike Putnal said a backhoe operator ruptured the line shortly before noon. The site is in an undeveloped area east of Broadway between 54th and 59th streets.

The gas source was cut off and the flames extinguished about 1:15 p.m. There was damage to some electrical power lines but none to the nearest homes, about 300 yards away.

A $94 million complex is being built on the site to house the Galveston County Sheriff's office, county jail, courts and the Galveston Police Department.

Thank God there were no injuries.

Shawn... do you know why your lights flickered? That seemed odd to me.

Linda, the report today was that the flames reached so high that they burned some overhead powerlines, which caused power outages in some areas closer to the problem and made power flicker in other areas.

WOW!! That is scary to me. We had an explosion last year at First Chemical. They just released the investigation into what caused it. Something to do with a chemical in one of the tubes there. Anyway, when it exploded it shook this whole town on a Sunday morning. The investigation revealed that if they had not gotten to that problem in time Pascagoula would have suffered great tragedy.

Flames that high would have me scared to death.
