SHOPPING CENTER DEATH BY FALL

Man dies in shopping carpark fall

A 19-year-old man died instantly when he fell five storeys from the top level of a Brisbane shopping centre carpark.

Police believe the man may have been with a group of skateboarders at the carpark around midnight, but are still investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.

A motorist discovered the body near the ground level carpark at Indooroopilly Shopping Centre, in Brisbane's west, at 7am (AEST) today.

Police later found a skateboard in a tree near the body and a couple of shopping trolleys were found near the area that he fell from.

"We are still unsure as to the exact circumstances that led to the young man falling from the upper level carpark," Indooroopilly Detective Senior Sergeant Geoff Acreman told reporters.

"We're still conducting some investigations to ascertain whether he was alone or whether there were other people present at the time.

"We're asking any persons that may have been on that level or even may have been in the area and may have seen something that could be of assistance to us to come forward."

Det Snr Sgt Acreman said shopping centre security staff had spoken to a group of about eight skateboarders who were on the top level of the carpark on Friday night.

He said one member of the group was a female who was wearing a cap with viking-like horns coming out of the side.

It was highly unlikely that the man could have skated into the carpark wall and fallen over, he said. There was a possibility that the shopping trolleys were somehow involved.

Asked if he could rule out murder, Det Snr Sgt Acreman said: "At this stage, we can't rule out anything.

"Until such time as we identify what happened immediately prior to the deceased falling from the height that he did, it would be highly inappropriate to speculate one way or another."

Police were trying to contact the man's family, who may live interstate.
