Hurricane symbol

#1 Postby muppie » Sat Nov 22, 2003 11:38 am

:?: Does anyone know if the hurricane symbol used in the southern hemisphere is the same as the one used in the northern hemisphere? Since the 6 and 9 together represent the counterclockwise rotation of the winds in the northern hemisphere, is this symbol reversed in the southern hemisphere?

Yes, the symbol is reversed. Imagine a mirror reflection of the symbol used in the northern hemisphere.

So, I guess everything's reversed down under? Does that mean the water goes clockwise instead of counterclockwise down the drain and during a flush?

Yes that is correct! Everything(Weather wise) is reversed down under!

Clockwise, counterclockwise, a perspective.

Actually it's how you are viewing the storm, toilet flushing, etc. When viewing a hurricane in the northern hemisphere you are viewing it from space in the northern hemisphere looking down on the hurricane. Conversely, when viewing typhoons in the southern hemisphere you are looking down on the typhoon from space from the southern hemisphere. If you were to view a hurricane from the northern hemisphere and able to look through the earth to the southern hemisphere and view a typhoon they would both be going in the same direction. And, of course, vice versa. I guess the best way to put it is that when in the southern hemisphere you are looking at everything upside down (I'm sure the Australians would beg to differ).

Toilets flushing? The Coriolis effect produces a measurable effect over huge distances and long periods of time, neither of which applies to your bathroom.

The toilet flushing thing is a myth. They all flush the same way. :33:
