Something to note... much of Oklahoma, Missouri, and Southern Kansas will lose its snow cover by Wednesday.

Campare it to Dec 14 2002, we have had more snow on the ground and for a longer peroid of time before melting.

yes this is true, but with a storm system coming out of the rockies tonight and anouther system coming in to the northwest coast the chance for ground cover is still pretty high. IMO

Sounds like what my walmart looked like earlier today. The entire parking lot was filled to capacity earlier today. It looked like everyone was ready to crank up a new years eve bash inside the super walmart store. No wonder walmart is so super!!! Low prices=super parties on new years eve.

When it snows 28 inches, I'll go to the super walmart just up the street from me and just party out with the tailgating for super walmart!!! If you can't tailgate before football games, you can tailgate in front of super walmart during a 2 foot snowstorm, hehehe.

Interesting... but at this time we didn't have any snow on the ground and it still wound up being the 3rd snowiest winter of all time in my location. I think that you have a point, but I am not sure how much emphasis you can place on the snowcover chart and how that affects the chances of snow.

The more snow cover you have across the northern and central US keeps the temps down, and allows cold and artic fronts to maintain their cold air mass as it moves south and east, this will provide low pressure systems coming out of the southern Rockies and the gulfcoast with the layers of cold air it needs to produce winter weather across the southern reagins.

I know as temp rise in areas across the US snow cover will melt but the ground moisture will help in the same respect.

one more thing the colder the ground can stay the longer it takes for the snow cover to melt away allowing the next storm to pile it up again.

I understand and I definitely can understand the reasoning with the cold temperatures, but I am just saying that snowcover doesn't necessarily equate to more snow or vice versa.
