TV Show: Still Standing - weather related!

#1 Postby Miss Mary » Tue Jan 06, 2004 8:31 am

Last night's Still Standing episode did not reflect well on wx enthusiast's like most of us. Did anyone catch it? One of the main characters, the wife named Judy's parents were visiting and her dad watched TWC relentlessly. Commenting on wx across the country, other than where the show is set - Chicago. Each time her father would go off on some wx fronts/stats, my family would look at ME and groan - "Mom/Mary, he's just like you. Always watching TWC." Now to be honest, I don't watch it that much anymore, really! After that little fiasco with their message boards, the whole place turned me off. Now if a big wx event is happening, then I'll tune in. I should mention we have Satellite TV now and local forecast's are nothing compared to what you get with cable. So why even wait for the 8's I say.......

But that one little show did not make us look good. Hubby said now he knows what I'll be like when we're seniors in the nursing home. LOL

LOL! My friends always tease me about liking weather etc. I wish weather lovers would get a better representation, but thats what people mostly think about our "obsession".

My friends and family know I am a weather geek, and I don't mind at all. They usually trust me to tell them what the weather will be like in the next 7 days moreso than any weather report on our local news or the local forecast on TWC.

I do watch that show fairly often, but darn if I didn't miss it last night. Oh well, I'll catch it on rerun.

Debi always complains that, if I had the TV for a whole day, there would be nothing on but TWC or FoxNews...but, then, she's equally predictable in her choice of "male-bashing" channels (WE, LMN, Oxygen, Lifetime, or reruns of "Law & Order, Special Victims Unit" 24/7).

I don't tink that it reflected poorly on weather geeks, or nuts, it just protrayed that TWC is majorly boring, which IMHO IT IS.....

Blizzard - I like your way of thinking! It is boring. I really think they need two Weather Channel's, similar to what MTV did. One can be fluff pieces, gardening and such. Learning how to set your thermostat properly and insulating your home in the winter. And the other can be all weather. Probably will never see it happen though.

Mary...I have seen how us weather enthusiasts are portrayed in many situations. That show is a take-off on the common typecast of a weather weenie.

I once participated in an interview with New York Newsday...a very well known and widespread news publication on Long Island. I introduced the writer to some other weather enthusiasts I knew there...and we were all excited about the chance to tell our story.

Well...tell it they did! While they did a credible job of sharing our passion for the sky, it quickly deteriorated into a commentary on how our love of weather must be a comment on our sexuality...our relationship with our moms, and the whole nine yards. I felt so disappointed that I vowed never to do another interview without seeing the finished product before publication.

In the end, I did quite a few more interviews. I had a great on-air one with Sky News in UK...and there was a live ten-minute one that was a blast all the way up at a radio station in the Northwest Territories.

And I got front page, page one of the Wall Street Journal. My phone rang off the hook that day..and it was ALL positive.

I've always done my best...whether in person, via the airwaves, or in print, to hold the value of real weather enthusiasts to a high standard. But sometimes, sometimes, the media just have to have their frenzy. That show was one of them.

Of course no one has ever made fun of other typecasts....like surfers or bookworms...have they?

Atta girl, Jacki-Lynne. You need to meet up with another Iowan named Jen...first met her on the TWC boards, and she had a fiesty and fun attitude about weather too. Love that spunk!!!

My friends and family will ask what the weather is going to be (in a timeframe that I haven't seen the news). I just have to laugh and forecast off the top of my head!

I finally turned on TWC for the first time in a few months! Regardless, it was not fun to watch.... bobble head dolls!

Jacki, I'm like you....would rather be outside on the onset of severe weather!
