Cop catches fast car at fast food restaurant

PORT RICHEY, Fla. (Court TV) — A fast-acting cop busted a suspected drunk driver as he sped from a fast food drive-through.

Florida Highway Patrol trooper Ronald Evans Jr. was working his usual graveyard shift on Dec. 14 when he pulled into the drive-through lane at a McDonald's Restaurant on U.S. 19 highway.

Even at 4 a.m., there was a line. While waiting to order, the trooper reportedly heard a cashier's voice crackle over the drive-through speaker: "You can only get the late menu at the bottom!"

The driver ahead of Evans seemed to be giving the cashier a hard time, acting "belligerent," the trooper wrote in a police report.

When Evans drove up to pay for his meal, the cashier reportedly said, "Officer, that guy should not be driving. He is drunk."

Suddenly, the driver tore out of the parking lot at 60 mph, according to the police report. Evans raced after the speeding 1998 Pontiac.

He caught up with the driver, Robert M. Grabowy, 22, who submitted to field sobriety tests and a Breathalyzer, states the police report. Grabowy reportedly had a blood-alcohol level of 0.168, nearly twice the legal limit.

Grabowy was arrested and taken to Pasco County jail, where he reportedly admitted drinking at a strip club. He was released on $250 bail.
