WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY EXPANSION

#1 Postby WXBUFFJIM » Fri Jan 09, 2004 3:42 am

A winter weather advisory is now in effect for Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and Chesapeake, Virginia effective this Friday until 4 PM EST. Light snow will become steadier and occasionally heavier during the day today. A general 1-3 inches of snow is expected for the tidewater area today. Snow will taper off to snow showers later today into tonight. However a northerly fetch will develop as colder air moves in Saturday morning. The combination of colder air temps and northerly winds over warmer bay water will result in bay effect snow showers and squalls Saturday morning from Norfolk over to Virginia Beach. An additional light accumulation on a more local scale is possible with that.

Further south, all of eastern North Carolina is under a winter weather advisory today. Snowfall amounts of 2-3 inches are expected from Eliazbeth City down through Cape Hatteras and even the Wrightsville Beach area.

A winter weather advisory is issued when a variety of winter weather is expected to occur such as snow, ice, blowing snow, and a mixed bag of precipitation. In this case it will be snow and blowing snow. While a winter weather advisory is considered to be significant enough to result in travel problems, the term advisory means that severe winter weather is not anticipated. Still use caution on area roads today from SE Virginia down into eastern North Carolina.
