vbhoutex and others in the South....

#1 Postby Johnny » Tue Jan 13, 2004 12:55 pm

Here is what a local met had to say about next week. What are y'alls thoughts?

The week beginning on the Jan 19th may be real nasty for Texas. Some or part of the brutally cold arctic air will make it into the state with a very active southern jet stream. If a disturbance riding along that jet phases with the shot of cold air, it may be a very messy situation in Texas (and might include southeast Texas.) This is not a cut-in-stone need-to-take-action message, but more of a we really need to watch this message.

If by messy he means snow or ice, I think it sounds great! Hopefully some of our forecasters or pro mets will give us their input on this. Those of us in the deep south, with the exception of OtherHD  , would love to see some interesting winter weather. :)

I guess it could happen as accuweather has us with rain and 30's at nite so maybe after glazing tx, it will coat fla with a nice layer of Ice/snow  Temp needs to drop at least 10f lower though here.

This is exactly the system or possibilities I have been alluding to in several posts. As of yesterday around noon(last time I looked at the models) The 24th-25th time frame looks to be the timing that would affect us the most in our area. The models were definitely showing a possibility of wintry precip in that time frame, especially to our NE and E, but did show us experiencing some wrap around winter precip probabilities. On the 23rd and/or 24th we would be getting the brunt of the precip and it would be rain. Forgetting the fact it is 9 days out, the question will be when does the SW GOM low expected to form happen vs the arrival of the Arctic air. If it happens say the 23rd, it could be past us too fast for a shot at winter precip. If it happens on the 24th then we would have a much better chance at a "messy" situation.

Well, it's a fine time for me to be living in an apartment with no central heat! :o Sometimes, cookie-cutter construction beats antique architecture and character.

Maybe you could get a cut rate on a motel room for a few days???? It is off-season in Galveston right now.

You should be even though as of yesterday it didn't look lilke it would be a heavy event up your way. You definitely havea better chance at winter precip at that time than we do because of the very cold air in place over you then. Any precip would be either ice or snow for you around the 24th and 25th.

I'll probably ask my best buddy and her fiance if I can stay in their guest room for a while, even though it's probably ridden with cat fur right now (achoo!). It's just barely off-season though since Mardi Gras is coming up. Honestly, I don't know when off-season is here. Plus I don't know how many people might venture down here during the Super Bowl.

Yeah yeah yeah. Haven't we heard this all before? I'm not buying it!!

The snow goose is gone. Dead. Kaput. Finito. Dead Fred.

Why do I feel like Charlie Brown, hearing Lucy tell me to try and kick the football one more time?!

You, blockhead!!!

BTW, did you guys know that Charlie Brown may have actually kicked the ball in the end? The recurring football gag ran in the strip once every year from 1956 to 1999 (with only three years without an occurrence). In the '99 strip, Lucy had to go in for lunch. She left the ball with Rerun. Then when she saw him later and asked him how it went, he said, "You'll never know!"

Charles Schulz died in 2000, and now we'll never know because a clause in his contract stipulated that the strip would end when he died.

Duck ... thank you! You have visually articulated my feelings about any "winter weather in the South" talk.

Oh but how I WANT to kick that darn football ....

Well this same met has now done a flip flop on his forecast for next week. I figured this would happen. No football kicking anytime soon but of course, things could change.

As for arctic air anytime soon- the door of opportunity has closed for awhile. Any arctic air will be shunted eastward into the Great Lakes/New England areas.

Bummer, this seems like the winter that wasn't for the deep south. I'm about ready for spring now just to green things up again.

Well, ya'll are gonna be surprised to hear me say this but would really rather NOT have anything in the next couple of weeks. With me starting back to school on Tuesday, daughter newly single and back in "tinycar" I have enough to worry over. I don't want to have to think about her sliding all over Irving/Dallas or me out trying to chase silly ice storms when I'll need to be concentrating on classes. So no honking from this southern duck this time. Give me a couple of weeks to catch my breath.

See, now I've done it!!! Now we'll really get something since I actually DON'T want it!!!
