Record Cold in Northeast
8AM EST, January 16, 2004
Brutal cold reached its peak across
parts of the northeast early Friday,
disrupting many residents and
businesses.
It was the coldest morning in nearly 25
years at Boston`s Logan Airport which
fell to 8 below zero. WeatherBug live
sensors in nearby suburbs showed
even colder readings early Friday, with
11 below zero in Hanson, MA. With
steady winds of 10 mph, the wind chill
was 27 below in Hanson.
Further south, WeatherBug live sensors
showed temperatures fell below zero
overnight as far south as northeast
Pennsylvania, northern New Jersey and
Long Island.
Winds will remain just as strong as
yesterday in New England and much of
the northern mid-Atlantic keeping wind
chills in the dangerously cold range.
Here are some expected wind chill
ranges for today:
Boston: -10 to -30
Hartford: -5 to 25
New York: 0 to -15
Philadelphia: +5 to 10
Washington, Baltimore: +15 to -5
Changes were on the horizon, however.
Warming temperatures had moved into
the western Great Lakes and western
Ohio Valley early Friday. A WeatherBug
live sensor in Port Washington, WI near
Milwaukee reported a temperature of
26 degrees, 15 degrees warmer than
Thursday`s reading at the same time.
This warming is expected to spread
toward the eastern seaboard over the
weekend. Temperatures Friday night
will not be quite as bitter in the
northeast with lows above zero nearly
everywhere.
As the warmup begins, all eyes will turn
to a storm now developing in the Plains
promises to spread a variety of wintry
precipitation toward the Great Lakes
and Ohio Valley Friday night into
Saturday. This storm is also expected
to impact parts of the northeast and
mid-Atlantic later in the weekend.
Freezing rain could create hazardous
travel and winter weather advisories
may be issued. Keep your WeatherBug
active in your system tray to ensure
receipt of all the latest forecasts and
advisories.
