Big rise in temps prompts rapid snow melt in Afghan/Pakistan

#1 Postby senorpepr » Mon Mar 08, 2004 4:20 pm

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan : March 06 (PNS) - The Indus River System Authority (IRSA) is expecting improvement by next week in the Rivers Indus and Jhelum water levels following the melting of snow, a senior IRSA official told reporters.

According to the official data released by IRSA on Saturday, water inflow at Tarbela was recorded at 16,100 cusecs while 23,800 cusecs were released.

The official said that an unprecedented increase in Afghanistan's and Pakistan’s day temperature over the weekend into the new week would contribute to melting in North West Frontier Province (NWFP) and Kashmir’s hilly areas.

The first big surge of the year of the hot subtropical ridge occurred over the weekend, first over Afghanistan and now over Pakistan.

Rains are then expected in the mountains beginning Tuesday. The rains expected in the next few days will also accelerate the snow melting.
