20 dead, hundreds injured as storms hit Bangladesh

#1 Postby senorpepr » Wed Apr 14, 2004 9:17 pm

DHAKA (AFP) - At least 20 people were killed and 600 others were injured when violent storms tore through two Bangladeshi districts on Bengali New Year's Day, police told AFP.

The storms ripped up trees and damaged homes in the northern districts of Mymensingh and Netrokona, local police said by telephone.

"The storm hit late in the evening today and primary reports suggest that at least 10 people were killed and 500 others were injured," said Mohammad Habibul Rahman, a policeman in Netrokona district, 128 kilometres (80 miles) north of here.

"The wind uprooted trees and hurled people yards away as well as causing heavy damage to mostly tin-made homes," he said.

Rescue work was under way and the death toll may rise, Rahman added.

Another 10 people were killed and about 100 injured in the Haluaghat area of nearby Netrokona.

A local policeman said six bodies had been brought to Mymensingh hospital while four others died elsewhere.

Nor' Wester storms are common at this time of year in Bangladesh, which celebrated the first day of the Bengali calendar on Wednesday.
