Good evening everyone. Things are looking alot better than last night at this time. Yesterday we reached 80 degrees for a high temperature. A good day for Ravens Spring Fest at M&T Bank Studium in Baltimore. Today we barely got to 55 degrees with rain and fog. It's 52 degrees as of 8:30 PM edt this Monday May 3rd.
Last night was amazing. I noticed numerous power flashes off to the west and northwest as the bow echo roared through Baltimore. I did not see any CG lightning with this. But it was bad enough with horizontal rains and wind gusts estimated to be 45-50 mph. There were higher gusts to my northwest where the full effects of the bow echo was realized. We were kind of on the southern edge of all the damaging wind potential. Needless to say, a nasty situation last night.
We certainly didn't get above the 58 mph severe threshold in gusts here in southeast Baltimore County. However I cannt say the same for west central Baltimore County where wind gusts over 60 mph occurred. Numerous trees and powerlines were knocked down in west central Baltimore County. During the height of this storm last night, 37,000 BG&E customers lost electricity, 16,000 of them in Baltimore County alone. The overall number is down to 9,000 tonight. However most of those outages are in Baltimore County. Last night definitely delivered some of the strongest wind gusts here in north central Maryland since March 6th, 2004 when gusts were up to 55 mph in a low topped thunderstorm microburst.
The hardest hit area though from this bow echo was in Madison and Albemarle Counties in Virginia where destructive wind gusts occurred. However doppler radar also indicated rotation in this severe thunderstorm over Albemarle and Madison Counties. Therefore an NWS ground survey will be conducted on Tuesday for this portion of Virginia to determine if there were straightline winds, a tornado, or both, and also determine intensity.
A quieter night tonight, but much colder. Warmer drier times are ahead though for the Mid Atlantic.
