Speaking of earthquakes

#1 Postby Opal storm » Tue May 04, 2004 12:08 pm

Did anybody see the second part of 10.5 last night,it was a lot better than the first episode,I liked it.Im not the kind of guy who crys over TV shows but that part where that guy got stuck in the hole with the bomb kind of got to me.

Speaking of earthquakes,I saw on the news there talking about a possible major earthquake hitting southern california in early September. No 10.5 but at least a 6.4,and L.A could be a target.

I haven't seen the 10.5 movie, but it is very dramatic.

Thanks for updating us OS, that may not be the case, but it's best for them to prepare for any disaster.

The first night was seen by 20.4 million viewers, the most watched movie in 5 yrs. on NBC and the most watched movie since the 9-11 one on CBS last year, according to CNN.

From the beginning, the constant zoom-in, zoom-out, zoom-in, zoom-out annoyed the crud out of me! But I just *had* to watch.

The special effects were great. However....

I thought it was nuts how people were saying, "Whew! It's over" when the 10.5-er finally stopped. Excuse me??? You've just had series of...what?...five massive quakes on the west coast in a matter of a week and you feel confident enough to say "It's over?" You've just experienced the earth opening up at your feet in a location where you thought you were safe (the evac center)....and you feel confident enough to say "It's over?"

Sorry, but my happy tailfeathers would be marching their way across the Mississippi if I was in their shoes.

And just WHERE was Kim Delaney's character? I have to admit, I lost bits of the movie here and there due to interruptions so I suppose I could go back and watch it again. But I recall in part one, she was in Seattle (or at least in the Sea/Tac area) when #1 hit. And then she and her crew were shaking when the fourth (I think it was the fourth) one hit while the FEMA guys were trying to plant the warheads. And yet, the seismology headquarters sure looked the same to me. So did she pack up and head to CA from WA without telling us? Or did I miss something?

How come they never mentioned all the lives lost (because you know darn well, ALL those people did not run THAT far when the fault line was separating and all that water was rushing into the crevice)? There must have been several thousand deaths when you see just how big that separation was.

It was a bit far-fetched IMO. However, I think the reason why people, myself included, enjoy watching disaster movies, especially after 9/11, is because we know it will all be resolved in a matter of 120 minutes or so. The heroes will have done their jobs, the families will be reunited, tears will be shed, hugs will be shared, and the flag will once again wave proudly in the dust-filled breeze. I like "Sum Of All Fears" for that reason.

Duck - Kim Delaney's character did move about awfully fast. One minute here, there and then out in the field. She even managed to catch a nap! And I have to say after they realized it wasn't over yet, where does she and her cohort go? To the tent city - dumb, dumb. Here they were in a helicopter. Go east you nimwit!!! But I guess she had to check in at command central, out there in wherever that was.

My husband didn't like the camera effects at all either. He couldn't stay with it, it annoyed him so much. I got over it.

And like you Shawn, when all was declared fine and it was 'over' I was thinking the same thing. Guess their budget ran out? LOL

I will have to check out "Sum of All Fears". Never heard of it until now.

LOL! And I'm still needing to check out "Dazed and Confused."

I completely forgot to add one other criticism:

Script-wise, it totally stunk! The final quake came far too late in the movie. I feel that it should have been at least 15 minutes sooner. Of course, that could be an editing snafu and not the writer's fault. IMO, there should have been a bit more focus on the survivors after the final quake -- the aftermath, the mourning of those who died, the damage (building-wise, not geographically), and their resolve to rebuild. Something like what was done in "The Day After" or "Alas, Babylon" (book by Pat Frank, had to read it in school to compare with TDA). Just showing us the quakes and damage as it happened, with a sigh from the survivors and a brief speech at the end by Beau was not the way to do it, IMO. It didn't have to be that much longer of a resolution, but at least five extra minutes could have said a lot.

"Sum Of All Fears" -- Ben AFLAC! and Morgan Freeman flick.

I couldn't help but think of "Independence Day" when Fred Ward's character volunteered to go down and fix the warhead. Kind of like Randy Quaid's character did in the battle against the aliens. Like you said in the other thread, Mary -- totally predictable.

ID4 was another good disaster flick. I saw that one on opening day during the first show. The theater was packed and it was the best way to see a movie like that. Everyone clapped and cheered when the aliens got their butts kicked. And you could just feel that whole sense of "He!!, yeah!" when Bill Pullman as the Prez gave his pep/battle speech and ended with "Today, we celebrate our independence day!"

Shawn - if you get to see D & C, check out Ben baby in it......he has a minor part but the worst part of all - you hated his character! So watch for that.....character's name is O'Banion if I remember right.

I don't see 10.5 receiving critical acclaim, possibly high ratings as pointed out elsewhere, but it wasn't on par with other disaster flicks. I don't even think I'd watch it again. Now that's saying something!

As soon as 10.5 started and we were introduced to Owen Hunter, it was driving me crazy wondering where I had seen the actor before. Thank goodness for imdb.com! He was in the movie Holes. A good movie actually, have you seen it Shawn?

Nope, I haven't seen "Holes." But I recognized Dule Hill from The West Wing, which I catch off and on, here and there, since it usually comes on right before Law & Order.

The one that threw me for a while was Zack Nolan (doctor and the FEMA manager's son), played by Ivan Sergei. For some reason, his face was so familiar but I couldn't place where I knew him, probably because he wasn't his usual character -- a new guy, Peter from Crossing Jordan.

And is it just me, but do Kim Delaney and Courteney Cox look alike or is that my wacky imagination? If not for CC, I could imagine KD playing Monica on Friends! I did hear recently that CC beat out Nancy McKeon for the role of Monica. But each time I see KD I think of CC!

They do look almost separated at birth, but Kim Delaney drinks too much.

Nancy McKeon as Monica? I don't see it. Good think CC won that role. NM was good in her TV movie roles. But since Facts Of Life, she's barely managed to hang on to a series, with the exception of The Division. Melissa Gilbert had that same luck after Little House, as did Kellie Martin until ER came along.

I'm still thankful Patty Duke didn't take the role of Capt. Janeway on whatever Star Trek series that was that Kate Mulgrew starred on. I'd have a hard time becoming a Trekkie, even for Patty Duke.

the nuke and then being atomized when it goes off is more from "Armageddon" and Bruce Willis than ID4. Or Deep Impact when the whole crew takes the nukes into the Comet.
