A warmup before the season starts but also very tragic

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

A warmup before the season starts but also very tragic

#1 Postby cycloneye » Wed May 26, 2004 6:28 am

It caughted the attention of many in the board and also the NHC but the system tried hard to develop however the shear didn't led up and end of it in terms of tropical development. But also the system broughted tragic events in Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico where between Haiti and the DR over 600 people died and in Puerto Rico one person died because of the floods. This tragic events show that it has not have to be a hurricane to cause tragic things in a place but flooding from tropical waves and troughs are sufficient to make the headlines in a tragic way. Here in Puerto Rico in 1985 a strong tropical wave that was almost stationary caused 85 deaths when a big mudslide covered many houses at Ponce in barrio Mameyes .So this weak low pressure was a wakeup call to us as the hurricane season arrives next tuesday.

The latest from the Dominican Republic and Haiti is moresad news as more than 1,000 people haved died and many more still are not found. And this was only a weak low pressure and not a hurricane. That is why the NHC posted the STDS on saturday because of the floods not for development of the low.

If this was a weak system then I must be going crazy  But I do have to say this did have a very nice looking area of low pressure while it was moving into Hati.

The problem was not the low pressure but the lack of radars and information to the public that saturday night as they were told that some scattered showers would fall but never the population was told about torrential rains (OVER 10 inches) in less that 6 hours.I say that a long range radar must be installed if not in Haiti in the southern Bahamas. This demonstrates that flooding is the #1 killer in the tropics and it not has to be a hurricane because a simple low pressure trough was the cause of this and here in PR a tropical wave was the cause of a tragic event in 1985.

What a tragic event, and to think this was just from a tropical disturbance.

Oh my... I hate to sound so awful, but just think what might have happened had this been a depression, storm, or even a hurricane.

Garrett that area at the border of Haiti/Dominican Republic is a very poor area where thousands live in the valleys there and were surprised as they were sleeping at saturday night with NO warning from the NWS there.Same as Brazil? As you may remember when that rare South Atlantic hurricane went to the Brazilian coast the NWS there said all along it was not a hurricane.
