BUFORD, Georgia (AP) -- Three people were killed and six were injured when they were struck by lightning at a park Sunday.
The nine were on a tree-lined walkway connecting a beach to a parking lot when lightning hit a tree at Buford Dam Park on Lake Lanier, a spokesman for the Gwinnett Police Department said.
Two men and a woman died instantly, Gwinnett fire spokesman Thomas Rutledge said.
Six others were taken to area hospitals; none suffered life-threatening injuries, according to hospital officials.
The group was visiting the park about 35 miles northeast of Atlanta when a major storm hit and forced everyone there to leave the water.
The names of the victims had not been released late Sunday
