Flood, mud-rock flow in SW China kills 10

#1 Postby senorpepr » Sat Jul 10, 2004 12:02 am

At least 10 people have been killed by mud-rock flow brought by floods in two counties of southwest China's Yunnan Province.

As of Tuesday morning, one person was reported missing, another was seriously injured and 400 more people were stranded by an unusually big flood in Yingjiang county.

Yingjiang and Longchuan counties received a rainfall of 221 mm in 14 hours till 2 p.m. Monday, causing big flood and mud-rock flow.

In Yingjiang County, a dozen villages were surrounded by floodwater. When a landslide occurred at the Dayingjiang Power Station, homes of 300 workers and their family members were inundated.

A cave-in occurred at a section of highway between Zhangfeng and Yingjiang counties, leaving 100 people atop a mountain and damaging two vehicles.

In neighboring Longchuan County, flooding has submerged 2,000 hectares of paddy rice and sugarcane fields and toppled 2,400 houses, affecting the lives of 26,000 local residents.
