Many people predicted that we'd go through the Iraqis like the Germans through France. Some of them were former military people; one was Kenneth Adelman of the Reagan crowd. Nobody in the Bush administration did nor did I, but former President William Jefferson Blythe Clinton did.
Quote: "This war is going to be over in a flash, so we can wait to do that. I mean you can always kill somebody next week. You can't bring 'em back next week..." The audience applauded his supposed wisdom.
Clinton thus tried to make the case we could stand for a little bit more diplomacy, let the inspections "work," when he was siding with the French and the Germans and the Russians at the Security Council.
His point was: Hey, this thing is going to happen in a flash. We're going to kick butt over there, so let's do the diplomacy. Bill Clinton was one of the people out there creating the notion it could be done with a snap of the fingers. If we're going to hold some accountable, let's hold him accountable too.
