Charlotte County info needed....

#1 Postby dixiebreeze » Fri Aug 13, 2004 8:19 pm

Does anyone have ANY information about injuries/fatalities in Charlotte Country, especially the PUnta Gorda area? I have relatives there and I'm in California.

Hope all of you on S2K are safe -- thank God, Citrus County was spared.

Dixie... see the thread on damage reports. So far it doesn't sound TOO bad, but there is not a lot of news coming from Sanibel, Captiva, Longboat Key. That's probably where fatalities may have occurred. safe travels...

Details are sketchy. Check weather channel if you get it. So far I have unofficially heard about one serious injury close to Punta Gorda when somone was driving in the storm and the car was blown off the road. Some wind damage as well. I can tell you that Sarasota county, and Miami area are sending DMAT medical assistance teams into the area as soon as the winds died down. Broward county is sending a task force of law enforcement officers towards the Charlotte county, Desoto county and Hardee county area. Help is coming. This information was reported to the State. It should be reliable.

This Bradenton news story suggests severe property damage in downtown Punta Gorda. But still only two traffic fatalities reported...

MAJOR damage in Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda. Well-built homes look to have a fair amount of damage. 60 people may be dead in a mobile home park. As long as they were in the sturdy building(concrete preferably), they are most likely OK but very shaken. It's really bad.

My local news had a phone call from someone in Punta Gorda, she was crying and very upset. They also said that bodies were stacked up?? near and around the Charlotte Mobile Home Park. That's all I have heard at this point.

The best source of news I've seen continues to be the nbc-2 website.

We checked in with family down there. My cousin lives in Lehigh Acres. As of 10AM EST, they are fine. No damage to their house, but they have no powere or water. He was picking up limbs, palm fronds, etc. that littered their yard.
He used to have a home in Port Charlotte but had sold it not too long ago. He told me that home is now gone.

Thank to all for the information. We just now heard that family in Punta Gorda is safe, though suffered tons of damage and total loss of their business. God is good.

His name will definitely be retired and he has joined the register of legendary storms that are on everybody's lips -- Andrew, Camille, and the like.

Dixie!

Hope your relatives are okay. I'm the attorney for several mobile home parks in Charlotte and Lee County and am still trying to get specifics on the parks where fatalities occurred.
Just blind luck that Mother Nature decided to spare Sarasota and Tampa Bay...
